The Santa Ana Air Force Base is home to the 185th Fighter Wing, and its predecessor, the 184th Fighter Wing. The wing was activated on 15 June 1940 as the 184th Bombardment Squadron, part of Ninth Air Force. It served with RAF Bomber Command during World War II. The squadron was inactivated on 20 September 1945. On 8 November 1947, the wing was reactivated at Santa Ana AFB as the 185th Fighter Wing and assigned to Third Air Force. It flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning squadrons until 1958 when it became a Republic F-86 Sabre squadron. The wing flew F-104 Starfighters from 1962 until it transitioned to F-15 Eagle fighters in 1966. In 1972, it became a McDonnell Douglas A-10 Thunderbolt III unit and operated until 1986 when it transitioned to Beechcraft EA-6B Intruder aircraft. In 1994, after more than 40 years of service in SANAFW, the 185th FW's last A-10s were retired by McDonnell Douglas and all active USAF units were consolidated into Wright Patterson AFB's 445th Tactical Reconnaissance Group (TRG) which also included elements of the 905TH Intelligence Gathering Squadron

Santa Ana is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and has a rich cultural history dating back to 1847. The city was founded by Spanish colonists as part of Rancho Niguel and later became a part of Los Angeles County. The first European to visit what is now Santa Ana was Gaspar de Portolà on November 7, 1769. He named it San Juan Bautista because he found an anchovy in the area and thought it resembled St John's Baptist's crossroads in Barcelona, Spain. The town began to grow rapidly after Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was completed on July 8, 1818. In 1827, gold were discovered at Saugus Springs east of modern-day Santa Ana and soon thereafter development increased greatly around the springs with completion of several mills and other businesses including two stores built by Captain Samuel Morse for his brother-in-law Hiram Maximphy Harriman (1807-1891). The mission chapel served as both church and school until 1851 when it burned down due to an accidental fire within its walls; however, the adjacent Adobe Walls still remain today as one of downtown Santa ana's most notable landmarks despite having been rebuilt numerous times since their original creation during World War II. In 1850s saw increasing settlement outside of northern Orange County so much so that there became little street grid development within present day downtown Santa Ana until well into the 20th century when boulevards such as 5th Avenue/State Street were constructed southward from DowntownSantaAna towards Irvine Spectrum Center through Union City which had been planned since 1915 but never built primarily because severe flooding created ideal land for shopping malls across Central Coast region bypassing downtown Santa Anita ValleyDuarte Road along I-805 Exit 116Aopened up portions of unincorporated Duarte Valley which would become Yorba Linda today) while 3rd Street West between State Street (now Broadway)and 4th Ave SE opened up entire eastern endzone portion over new expressway SR 101widened expressway originally called Harbor Freewayconnecting Riverside County(west)to El Monte(east), maintenance facilities being located near current site of Honda Center complex northwesterly side only separated from freeway by old railroad right-of way
