Santa Ana is a city in southern California, United States. The population was 154,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Santa Ana is located on the western edge of San Bernardino County and is bordered by Riverside County to the north, Orange County to the east, and Los Angeles County to the south and west. The area now known as Santa Ana was first settled by Native Americans in what is now southeastern Orange County. In 1769, Mission Santa Anita was founded in this area and soon became an important center for missions in Southern California. In 1821, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna made it his provisional capital after capturing Alhambra from Spanish troops in what is now Riverside County; he named it Santiago de los Caballeros (Saint Stephen's City). On November 6, 1871, Santa Ana became an independent municipality when its charter was ratified by voters at a special election held under state law that allowed cities to be formed without previous approval from their respective county legislatures. A year later on January 1st of 1872, it incorporated as a city with a population of 54 people. In 1949–1950 during World War II (1939–1945), Santa Ana served as both headquarters for U.S Forces Europe and military airfields for bombers engaged against Nazi Germany near Rome and Teaneck in New Jersey; these airfields were also used for training fighter pilots destined for combat operations over Japan during World War II. As war endedanta ana had more than tripled its population to around 200 people but experienced rapid growth thereafter due mainly to immigration from Asian countries – most notably such Chinese immigrants who had come through Garden Grove/ Anaheim Hills stations along I-5 until they reached downtown Los Angeles following the Opium Wars of 1848–1849 which resulted in large numbers of Chinese refugees entering North America via Oregon Trail before turning inland into Anaheim/Orange counties through channels like Jacklin's Pass between Dana Point Peninsula and San Pedro Bayou then upslope into today's Ventura County town of Oxnard before crossing la Honda River just south of Interstate 5 becoming today's Thousand Oaks suburb Crescent City! Some would note that some aspects or features associated with "urban sprawl" or "the flight out of small towns" might have been initiated or promoted within this process such as elected officials encouraging new residents to settle near public services while others terms like "brain drain" might apply more appropriately considering that prior thereto many skilled engineers & scientists relocated right back East Valley Cities adjacent Boulder Colorado etc.) One example: In 1984 Mayor Tom Bradley announced plans by then Angeleno Mayor Rudy Giuliani Jr., seeking annexation adjacent eastside Seal Beach Heights & worlds largest shopping mall planned there - never materialized either but examples could be numerous throughout Orange Counties during this time period whensay "open space" policies were rampant despite overwhelming evidence otherwise!
