In 1846, following the Mexican-American War, Santa Ana became part of United States territory because of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war between Mexico and America. On January 6, 1850, during American rule over California under President Fillmore, General Mariano Escobar surrendered control of Rancho Los Alamitos to Ulysses S.
