Santa Ana was founded by Mexican soldiers as Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana y Costilla on November 15, 1821 as part of military occupation of Alta California during Spanish Empire's effort to hold onto portions of North America that had become independent due to gold discoveries in Mexico City. The town grew rapidly thanks to waves of immigrants from Spain who arrived during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1869 Santa Ana became an incorporated city when it joined the newly created Orange County. A large adobe building known today as "El Edificio" (the Building) was erected on December 14th, 1842 by Pájaro Flores Magellan for $812 from funds he had raised from men prospecting for gold nearuguay Mountain where he had discovered rich silver veins some weeks earlier while acting under orders from Captain Fernando Rivera Baca about 8 miles southeast at Adobe Walls Road northeast of present day Yorba Linda along what is now I-5 with its junction with State Route 9 southbound just east of downtown Palm Springs; this area now includes much areas east of US 101 near Antelope Valley Airport).
