The first European to see Santa Ana was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. He named the area San Antonio de Padua because of its apparent resemblance to the biblical city of Bethlehem. The mission was founded on October 14, 1776 by José Nieto and Fray José de Escobar, both Spaniards. Santa Ana became a part of Alta California on September 3, 1821 when it was included as part of Mexican territory after the Mexican-American War. The town's name originated with Father Anselmo Samuelson who called it Nueva Vizcaya (New Valencia). A post office operated in Santa Ana from 1836 until 1860. In 1868, the Southern Pacific Railway arrived and began serving the community; this railway is now known as Amtrak's Orange Line. On January 1, 1886, Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted land grants totaling 561 acres (2 hectares) to eight American citizens: Joaquín César Chávez, Ramón Fierro, Lorenzo Pico Larraina, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Pedro Gil and Santiago Sepúlveda. In 1905–1906 Don Francisco Reyes reissued a grant for an expansion of infrastructure including water supplies and schools for local children. On November 30th 1907 officials from Los Angeles convened a meeting at which they decided that Santa Ana should be made capital of California due to its strategic location between San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles County
