Santa Ana is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 43,233 as of the 2010 census. Santa Ana's history goes back to 1821 when it was founded by Captain Charles Wagoner and his wife Maria Anna Hahnenthal. It became a town in 1847 and an incorporated city in 1893. The name "Santa Ana" comes from Spanish Saint Anthony of Padua who died in 1753 at the age of 72 years. The first post office called Santa Ana was established on December 12, 1800 by Francisco Estrada. It was renamed Santa Ana on February 2, 1821 after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1848, part of Rancho Rinconada which encompassed present-day Santa Ana went to James Phelan for purchase from Manuel Nieto and Juan José Cisneros for $851 per acre (1/4 mile²). Phelan named it La Purísima Concepción after his patron saint, Immaculate Conception. The City Council voted November 5, 1850 to change the name to Santa Ana because then-Governor ad interim José Joaquin Miller threatened to send federal troops into San Pedro if they did not change their emblem soon or face impeachment charges. On December 12th 1850 the council changed its official name once again to Santiago del Norte due to petitions received from citizens of that name in other cities including San Francisco and Los Angeles where those same names had previously been used only for historical reasons or ranch operations only).
