The first European to visit what is now Santa Ana was Portuguese missionary João Rodrigues who landed on January 5th 1769 during his third journey from Goa to Monterey Bay. In 1802 the Rancho Santiago de los Padres Mexican land grant was sold to José María Cámpora by Governor Manuel Nieto. On July 16th 1810 Juan Rodríguez Caballero wrote: " arrived herefrom Vizcaya with three hundred head of cattle [...] A piece of this rancho has been set apart as la casa de santo antónio." On November 1st 1814 Nicolas Bachelet granted Rancho Santiago de los Padres Mexican land grant to Joséto García Simón which included part of present day Santa Ana City Limits including Pioneer Park and parts of today's North Park and East Park neighborhoods. In 1840 Pedro Fonseca sold part of Rancho Santiago de los Padres Mexican land grant to Fernando Rivera y Costilla which includes present day Midway Heights neighborhood including Pioneer Park. In 1850 Agustín Carranza purchased part of Rancho Santiago de los Padres Mexican land grant from Fernando Rivera y Costilla which included present day Midway Heights neighborhood. The name given by Captain Diego Rivera to Mission Santa Ana on May 14th 1913 refers to all these grants -Mission Santa Ana del Norte (Northeast). This document also mentions that "the lots were distributed among their number according to ability". After coming ashoreanchored off Point Reyes Station,, Spanish sailors named it La Isla del Rey Don Francisco ("The Island Of The King") but later shortened it to Nuestra Señora del Rosario("Our Lady Of Fatima"). On February 10th 1621 Franciscan friar Junípero Serra anchored off Point Reyes Station bearing trade goods for Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (Angels Church) when he discovered what may have been the first human footprint in America- that of Portuguese sailor Diogo Gomes Tarceiro while exploring Californian coasts in 1542-43 aboard shipwrecked treasure seeking El Dorado
