The hangar was used by both Navy and Marine Corps planes until it was closed in 1969. From then on, the hangar became the home of Santa Ana’s City Hall. In 1965, the City of Santa Ana petitioned state legislators to ask Congress to appropriate money to build a new naval air station in their city. After much debate and discussion, Congress passed legislation appropriating $2 million for the construction of a navy base atSanta Ana Naval Air Station. On April 1, 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed into law H.R. 4606 – which designated Santa Ana Naval Air Station as a military installation under control of the Department of Defense (DoD). The first military flights atSanta Ana NAS took place on May 2nd, 1966 when Marine jets flew over downtown Los Angeles en route to participate in Operation Neptune’s Spear – an attack against North Vietnam that would later become known as The Gulf War.
