The next major Naval vessel to arrive in town was the USS Perry (1843) which housed a torpedoboat squadron. In 1861, after California became a state, warships of the United States Navy began arriving at San Diego docks. A few years later, on December 13th, 1865, Commodore James Stockett's sloop-of-war Enterprise anchored off of Point Loma and presented gifts for Christmas to local families. Enterprise was decommissioned in 1904 but her memory lives on through Navalnytsa Yacht Club located on North Harbor Boulevard near downtown Santa Ana. As time passed new vessels were commissioned into the navy and manySanta Ana veterans have served as Commandant or Vice Admiral in various branches of service. There has been an ongoing tradition of giving presents to naval members stationed outside of California since at least 1916 when Rear Admiral Alfred Tilton donated 1st class tickets for passage home given out free to any sailor serving aboard one of America's "all boys" navies afloat during World War I. The first member of the Santa Ana branch who received such a gift was Commodore John Waddell who gave tickets away free while commanding Destroyer Squadron Five from 1915-1916. It wasn't until 1941 that Navalnytsa Yacht Club began accepting military spouses as members and over time they've continued to give out presents to sailors stationed around the world aboard their own vessels or as part of unit deployments overseas. The SANTA ANA branch is no exception; every year since 1984 we've sent someone alongidee Marines or Sailors from Camp Pendleton Naval Base just outside San Diego for Christmas! This year there will be 4 different Marine detachments represented including: Teamsters Union Local 571 from Poway; Cal Coast Guard Unit 6001 from Vista; and Military Sealift Command Unit 9201 from Miramar Beach!
