Santa Ana, California is a city located in Orange County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 153,719. The name "Santa Ana" was given to the town by Spanish Missionaries in 1821. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1887. Santa Ana is located on what was once part of Rancho San Pedro de las Aguas and now is known as Downtown Santa Ana. The first Europeans to visit Santa Ana were Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 and 1770 respectively. In 1821 Juan Bautista Alvarado founded the Mission Santa Catalina de Nuestra Señora del Rosario with land grants from King Ferdinand VII of Spain. TheMission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1835 but rebuilt under Mexican rule that year. In 1861 American Civil War veteran J P Morgan sent his son John Morgan into Anaheim to buy land for $5 per acre (today's equivalent to around $140 per square foot). Morgan named his new town Anaheim after himself because he thought it would be easier to find people who knew about him there than back atMorgantown, Maryland or any other place where he lived at the time. John Morgan died three years later without having accomplished anything noteworthy in Anaheim other than naming it after himself. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Santa Ana were Frenchmen and Missionaries from Quebec City named Jacques Marquette and Jean Nicolet. Marquette led an expedition into what is now central Orange County on November 3rd, 1693 while Nicolet joined him a few weeks later on December 4th. They named their new settlement Saint Anne's After The Virgin Mary since they thought she would protect them from Indian attack or war. When we find out where this name originated we can only assume it came from some local saint like St Anne or St John the Baptist which all suggest that there may have been more than one person with this name if it comes from any specific place or event. The first post office called "Santa Ana" opened on February 14th, 1887 under the name of Santiago del Norte due to Mexican rule which did not recognize U.S Postal Service postal rates so relatives living back then had to pay for their mail at Rancho San Marcos because there wasn't any other way for them to get letters delivered faster than traveling down there every week picking up mail along the way! As time passed our area became known as 'The Village' because most people hereabouts started buying land after getting married during those early days when all you could do was marry someone who already owned a piece of property! Today many people still live close together within walking distance of each other thanks especially to high-speed internet and satellite TV offerings which have made shopping easy reachable even outside of downtown Santa ana!
