Santa Barbara, California is a city in southern California on the Santa Ynez River. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Barbara County and the largest city in Ventura County. The area now known as Santa Barbara was first inhabited by tribes of Native Americans who called it Sacsayhuaman Creek or San Bartolo Creek. The Mission Santa Cruz de la Venta founded in 1769 and named it after Saint Jerome, whose relics were brought to this region by Father Diego Rivera in 1892. The mission served as a center for trade with nearby missions and villages that extended down into Ventura County. In 1853, General José Joaquín Murrieta established Rancho Adobe Seco about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Santa Barbara on the present-day campus of UCSB. This ranchos were part of an immense Rancho Cuyama platted from 1834 to 1850 by Juan Bautista Alvarado, one of Spanish America's most successful landowners. In 1863, when California became a state, Governor John Witte decided to move the capital from Monterey to Sacramento because he felt that Sacramento could provide more efficient government services than Monterey. On July 27, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation creating Los Angeles County and naming it after George Washington Carver Jr., one of his favorite American scientists and educators who had helped improve agriculture in northern California during the Gilded Age years before. At first there was much resistance to this change because many people saw Los Angeles as little more than an empty wilderness with no economic value—at least until they heard about Carver's pioneering work in developing new ways to grow crops using irrigation water from rivers south of L.A.'s city limits
On November 25, 1846, the first post office in Santa Barbara was established. Santa Barbara became a city on January 5, 1889. On October 9, 1910, it amalgamated with nearby Pismo Beach to form the City of Ventura.
