The Santa Barbara Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1868. The unit was the first county-level military organization in California. It was formed as part of the California Militia Act of 1861 and served in various conflicts, most notably during the Mexican-American War. In 1916, the Santa Barbara Army National Guard became part of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. From there, it continued to serve as an all-male institution until 1990 when it became women’s only. The Santa Barbara Army National Guard is composed of Volunteers and Reservists from throughout Santa Barbara County and includes units stationed at Camp Pendleton ( martial arts), Arnold AFB (aircraft wing), and on shore installations at Laguna Beach (firefighting) and Ventura County (planning). The unit also maintains a strong relationship with its counterparts in other states through joint exercises such as Joint Warrior or “Crazy Horse” training events held annually at Fort Irwin or San Diego Air Force Base.
