In 1905, Antonio Maria Arce bought Rancho Cucamonga and started growing coffee for the University of California at Berkeley. After World War II, many businesses closed in Santa Barbara because of the recession. However, one business that survived was the Lighthouse Coffee Company which roasts and sells artisan coffee products out of their store on Main Street in downtown Santa Barbara. In 1977, Don Brewer opened The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Shop in what is now known as Brewer's Place on Broadway in downtown Santa Barbara. It was the first Starbucks inside an historic building!
