The Santa Barbara Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community since 1889. In that time, the Coast Guard has grown from a small detachment of sailors to a world-class force with over 200 personnel. Today, the Coast Guard provides critical support for local businesses and operations, including patrols on major harbor entrances and safeguarding against terror threats. Today, the Coast Guard also celebrates its century-long legacy through special gifts given annually to members of the public. These gifts include items such as lifejackets, weather gear, and boats. Each year, Coast Guardsmen and women from all around the United States come to Santa Barbara to receive these unique gifts. One of the most popular gift giving seasons is Christmas season. As we approach this celebrated holiday season, it is important that our coast guard friends know about our appreciation for their service and how they contribute to our community. The Santa Barbara Coast Guard Station would like to share some of our favorite coast guard history moments with you! In 1886, when Captain Charles Fenton took command of the station’s first boat (the cutter Cutter), he made it his mission to protect maritime commerce in San Francisco Bay Area waters. For many years Captain Fenton was credited with being one of the earliest responders in California to any type of emergency situation related piracy or attempted robbery on ships docking at or sailing in those waters! Captain Fenton’s predecessor had joined forces with other law enforcement agencies during 1875 when an armed group sailed into Yerba Buena Cove seeking passage southwards onshore; however no damage was done and no people were arrested! Following Captain Fenton’s inauguration in 1886 more advances were made by both him and his officers in regards to methods used against pirates: deactivation devices now used as flares instead of traditional lighters which could be seen long distances while vessels docked at sea; crew training program which stressed seamanship skills; use of modern Sonar technology which allowed detection even at great depths; construction/maintenance/repair efforts aboard shipyards ashore during times when there was little available manpower ashore due largelyto regular strikes by unions among dockworkers! During these early years there occurred - on average - 3 piracy incidents per month off Santa Barbara Harbor....However starting in 1893–1894 an increased frequency began occurring due largelyto organized crime groups operating out of southern Mexico who were kidnapping American citizens for ransom then smuggling them across international boundaries back home.....Piracy continued unabated until January 1st 1892 when Mexican authorities thwarted an attempt by two Spanish nationals posing as Americans working for a rival Mexican business interests (Vigilantes) under coverof naval gunfire….This event marked an end…of era where smugglers captured American citizens for ransom within U.S.–Mexican borders…..From this point forward kidnappings became much less common mainly because Mexican authorities became better equipped & able To track fugitives…..With increasing advancements came improved equipment requirements – such as motorboats capable towlights & Sonar capabilities required during nightime patrol duties….As stated earlier Captains Charles Eilers & Arthur Kapp assigned permanent dutyTechnical Services Offices ashore……..These Technical Services Offices arrived on shore beginning December 15th 1915 after 4 monthsdelay caused by World War I………….. By 1922 “ Headquarters At Punta Gorda No longer necessary abolished effective February 17th 1927″ Commanding Officer Rear Admiral John Waddell noted that barracks buildings “had become too expensive (& unwieldy)&No new installation could be justified without financial justification” so facilities were transferred from downtown waterfront area along First Street past Masonic Temple then east onto Naval Base Road where they remain today…………..On July 14th 1923 USCG Motor Pool opened adjacent Navy Yard Annex adjacent parkland west side First Street between Mike O'Malley Boulevard & Park Way……….. Commodore George Cushing visited June 6th 1924 while enroute from Monterey Bay naval base aboard USS Constitution carrier… Commodore Cushing toured electric generation plant located at Point Loma prior exercises off Ventura County shoreline ended up offshore drilling 9 holes thru rock formation producing oil wells etc………. On return trip LtCdr JB Broughton met him onboard Constitution vessel…Vice Admiral Harriman called upon Commodore Cushing at Punta Gorda Island Naval Air Station regarding military exercise scheduled for Sunday morning June 12th 1925… Vice Admiral Harriman explained plans involving possible air defense measures should hostilities break out………… With decreased activity associated with World War II many coastal installations closed but volunteers continued patrolling until 1946When last active coast guard unit left State Patrol Department………………………………………………………………………………………………………. The Santa Barbara Coast Guard Station was founded in 1905. The present station is located on the east side of the town of Santa Barbara. It is one of three coast guard stations along the California Coast.
Santa Barbara, California is a city in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. The population was 44,883 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Ynez Peninsula on the Central Coast of Southern California. The first European to see Santa Barbara was Giovanni da Porto in 1542 and he named it after Saint Barbara, who had been martyred in Palestine. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Santa Barbara became part of Mexican territory until 1848 when it returned to U.S. ownership as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As Californias statehood approached, officials decided that Santa Barbara should be its capital since it had a rich cultural history dating back to Mission era missions and coastal settlements including Lompoc and San José de la Laguna where Spanish missionaries founded modern day Los Angeles and San Diego counties respectively in 1769 and 1781 respectively In 1859, Governor Manuel Micheltorena designated Santa Barbara as the site for what would become known as University Park; however local citizens successfully objected to the name change citing their belief that "University" represented an educational institution rather than a research center destined for southern CA The university relocated to campus location near Interstate 5 during the 1960s with resultant growth in popularity of this unincorporated community which now has a population exceeding 50% of that of downtown Santa Barbara The name "Santa Barbara" originated with mission era Spanish settlers who called this area "Tierra del Fuego", meaning "land beyond fire". This naming convention continued into present day where many streets or neighborhoods within town bear names such as Paseo de la Bahía (Ferry Road), Avenida Nacional (National Avenue), Callejonobos (Street leading from bluff down to Harbor), Paseo del Rinconcito (Rincon Hill Boulevard) etc.; while other areas like La Mesa have only one street bearing their name. Some notable natives include movie star Elizabeth Taylor and author Don Freeman who both resided here during different parts of their lives

Santa Barbara is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has a rich history dating back to 1849. The city was founded by Spanish settlers as an adobe mission, and in 1854 it became an independent municipality. Santa Barbara's history is intertwined with that of California and the United States, and during its journey from Spanish settlement to American statehood, the city experienced many changes. The original Santa Barbara Mission was built on a hill overlooking the now-defunct Inyokhiva Narrows estuary and was one of two missions established in what is now Santa Barbara County. The otherMission, known as La Jolla, was built farther up the coast near Carpinteria.missionaries worked at both Missions until 1795 when they were transferred to Monterey Peninsula for more permanent residence. In 1849, following Mexico's cession of California to America, numerous American citizens arrived in Santa Barbara looking for land grants or gold discoveries. A group led by James Wolkart purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of Rancho Los Alamitos near present-day downtownSantaBarbara from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena on July 3rd, 1849. At first the group used this land only for grazing but soon discovered valuable mineral rights beneath the surface including gold veins ranging from . However their discovery came at a high price; Wolkart had to sell all his holdings back to Micheltorena for just $4 per acre ($160 per hectare). Wolkart continued working on his mining enterprise even after his return home in 1850 due largely to financial support he received from friends in San Francisco who were eager for new opportunities in California once Mexico lost its territory to US control. By 1851 Wolkart had developed a large smelter located near modern day Downtown SantaBarbara which produced lead ore that was shipped off into nearby Silicon Valley where it fetched higher prices than any other source available at the time despite being overworked and contaminated by Lead Acreage Company's operations east of Sacramento River which polluted much of Northern California during this time period
Santa Barbara, California was founded on December 21, 1776 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his brother Francisco. It is located in the south central region of California. The area now known as Santa Barbara County was first populated by indigenous people who called it Yumañá. In 1821, Mission Santa Cruz was built in what is now downtown Santa Barbara and it became a U.S. Naval Station from 1865 to 1868. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1889. The population of Santa Barbara reached 100,000 in 1910 and 300,000 by 1920. In 1949 the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) was founded in downtown Santa Barbara with the intent to become one of America's leading universities.
