Santa Barbara is a city in the U.S. state of California, located on the Santa Barbara County shore of the Central Coast of California. The population was 107,405 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Santa Barbara was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542. He named it San Salvador de la Vera Cruz and reported his findings back to Spain. Spanish missionaries established missions here from 1769 to 1821. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson proclaimed that Santa Barbara be made the seat of county government for Ventura County because "the people here have always borne an honorable part in our great country." The site for what would become Santa Barbara was chosen by AGB&B Travel Companys president George Jointae in 1919 after touring several local towns and villages which he felt were too small or uninhabited for him to take home as a souvenir photograph album he had ordered shipped overseas with his company’s new planes; he called them “the prettiest village I ever saw” and decided they would make a beautiful town upon its location on two artificial islands created by filling up sand dunes caused by sea level changes over time while lying at low tide near where they now sit east of Highway 1 between Goleta and Carpinteria (now part of Oxnard). In 1928, when Interstate 5 opened through central CA, Route 66 followed its routing along US 101 south from Los Angeles just past Pismo Beach before turning east onto Hwy 1 south to Carpinteria then northeasterly onto Isla Vista beach Road until it intersected SR 82 about 2 miles east of downtown SBA before continuing southeast on I-5/SR 282 becoming one continuous road as it crossed into Sonoma County near Redwood City soon afterwards becoming Alameda County Line Road On January 16th 1950 pursuant to section 6165(a) et seq., portions still within SBA became sections 707 (southwest quarter), 708 (northwest quarter), and 709 (northwest half) thereof prior thereto being redesignated as State Route 22 which eventually became State Route 98A when those portions were realigned west of SR 99A along I-580 freeway following the former alignment of US 101 northwesterly from downtown SBA State Route 98A continued easterly along present day SR 99A corridor into Napa County concurrent with existing highway
