When Santa Barbara was founded in 1785, the area that now makes up the city was covered by a dense forest. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who sailed into what is now Santa Barbara Bay on November 14, 1542. At that time it was an uninhabited archipelago of small islands. Some believe that Cabrillo may have seen and landfalled on san barbara because there are several small rocks located near where he purportedly landed. In 1821, California became part of Mexico after US-Mexico War and during this time, many gifts were sent back and forth between Santa Barbara and San Diego as part of trade. One such gift was a set of silverware from president James K. Polk which included two forks and four spoons. On September 26, 1846, Santa Barbara welcomed its first postman when Captain Manuel Nieto y Arellano postulated from Ingua with a shipment of provisions for the town's growing population (adding 320 more residents to the already burgeoning community). Three years later on October 1stSantaBarbara’s first store moved into its current location at 5th Street and Broadway Avenue; one block east of present day City Hall plaza (now State Street/Highway 101). On January 6th1849the first issue of "The Californian" newspaper began publication from The Gadsden Telegraph office in downtown San Francisco before moving to late night printing locations throughout San Francisco until 1861 when it reached its final destination at 2555 Market Street in downtown San Francisco (now called Powell Square). With so much growth going on in both towns during those early days – including new churches, schools, hotels and businesses being erected – it isn't surprising that some objects acquired an importance beyond their original purpose or function. For example: A horse trough found near High Beach along Highway 1 has been commonly interpreted as an offering meant for St George's Chapel but actually date back to 1886 when Father José Gomez donated land adjacent to today's Cathedral steps for use as a church property swap meet lotteries prize draw! A number of items from this period still reside withiniddistrict limits today such as pickaxes used by farmers during plowing through fields or mason jars used for water storage/jugglers using them for props also occurred during this era hence their significance! In fact one particularly interesting artifact dating back to this era is an old fashioned threshing machine which resided at 1281 Sutter Road until it burned down in 1984 while being stored inside what is now known as the Santa Ynez Inn! It should be noted that although some objects may have been given increased attention due to their historical significance they are not limitedto these particular periods or areas; any old object can find itself collecting dust if left unsupervised over time!
