Other early businesses include J & W Gunsmith (1871-1972), Purdy’s Pharmacy (1872-1973), Fenton’s Grocery(1873-1976) and Gorman’s Hardware(1876-1977). In 1903, two brothers named Harvey and Harry Harkins bought a sawmill on San Miguel Creek near present day downtown Santa Barbara from John Crayton for $1,500 cash plus 10% interest per year. They renamed it Harkins Sawmill after their father who had owned it before them. It was operating as a sawmill and grist mill when they decided to open a gun shop at its current location on Main Street in 1935 under the name “Guns & Ammo” with Harvey Harkins as president/CEO and his brother Harry as vice president/COO/CTO/. At this time Guns & Ammo also included an ammunition store next door operated by George Smedley which remained operational until 1958 when it closed due to lack of customership In 1960 Frank Steiner came into possession of an old shotgun magazine belonging to Elias Howe that he claimed originated with the American Revolution. When Mexican independence from Spain began to gain momentum in 1821, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered his troops into Northern Mexico under the command of Colonel Pedro Fortunato Carrillo to drive out all American settlers who had invaded Mexico without First Mexican War sanction from Spain. On October 25th (the day before Thanksgiving), 1821 (the date our current pope celebrates), General Lopez discovered that an invading force had landed at Monterey Bay and proceeded inland towards what would become Santa Barbara County when he learned about American intentions from Captain John Sutter who had been ashore during the attack on Monterey naval base two days earlier
