Santa Barbara, California is home to one of the most unique and beloved maritime cultures in the United States. The city's rich maritime history dates back to when it was founded as an agricultural town on a small island in the San Joaquin River. In 1695, Spanish fur traders discovered and explored this area, which included Santa Barbara Island. They named the island Isla de Santa Barbara after their patron saint, Blessed Saint Barbara. Over time, the town began to grow around this harbor and its docks. By 1835, Santa Barbara had become a thriving port with shipyards, warehouses and other businesses. In that year, Governor Pico wrote an executive order calling for all ships built in California "to be christened with the best honor our arms can bear." The first ship to be christened in Santa Barbara was the USS Constitution (1836). The city's love affair with sailing began early on. The first recorded instance of sailing taking place within miles of Santa Barbara occurred on May 11th of that year when John Brown set out from Point Fermin for Monterey Bay aboard his brigantine HMS Fortune. Brown was joined by three other vessels- HMS Dolphin ( commanded by Nathaniel Hawthorne), USS Enterprise (ofCaptain David Dixon Wood) and HMS Bounty (of Captain James Cook)-and continued their voyage upriver until they reached Belle Isle about two weeks later at a distance of only seven miles from shoreline. On July 1st of that year Brown sailed into Monterey Bay for what he thought would be a day's exploration before making landfall at Point Lobos about seventy miles south of where he started his journey In 1847 Commodore Joshua Sloat took command of Perry's squadron off Yerba Buena Island after Commodore George Washington Barker had been killed during Battle Of Palo Alto On December 29th while anchored off La Jolla charts showed Juan Bautista Vasquez' vessel La Victoria bearing down on them at eighteen knots bearing fifty five degrees east longitude; however no signals were sent out because both ships were under orders not to fire upon any boats or vessels coming near them We therefore made signals to him that we should have no objection if he desired to land who could provide us with water but received no answer US Navy Lt Cdr Augustus Higginson also responded sending out a boat containing accommodations for ten men commanded by First Lieutenant John Fitzgerald Toombs who manned it from Anacapa Harbor

It is located on the southern end of San Francisco Bay and has a combined land area of 194 square miles (510 km2). The City of Santa Barbara was incorporated in 1897 as a result of an act by the state Legislature. As part of California's first efforts to make it more open to settlement by people from other states, Senator John A. Wickersham (D-Santa Barbara) co-sponsored legislation creating what would become Santa Barbara County on October 1, 1853. On July 14, 1857, the town site was chosen for its location between Yerba Buena Island and Point Conception Peninsula on Seal Beach Peninsula; one year later it had grown to include all of present-day Santa Clara Valley. The first post office opened in 1865; it was moved to its current location in 1907 because two other towns were consolidated into Santa Clara County: Morro Castle and Watsonville. In 1875 Congress created Los Angeles County as part of popular demand for Californians taking advantage of new railroad laws giving residents easy access to Sacramento or Mexico City.
