The Santa Barbara National Guard was organized on December 12, 1907. It was the first local military unit in Santa Barbara County. The National Guard is made up of citizens who volunteer their time and resources to help protect the community and its residents. On October 25, 1951, the Santa Barbara City Council passed an ordinance that authorized the donation of firearms to the Santa Barbara National Guard for use during strikes by teachers in nearby cities. There were no shootings that took place as a result of this ordinance, but it did provide financial support for the National Guard’s shooting range and other weapons needs. Since its inception, the Santa Barbara National Guard has been responsible for safeguarding our community and contributing to national defense. In addition to providing service during emergencies or state-wide events such as hurricanes or school lockouts, members have also provided protection at functions like county fairs or city parades.

On January 1, 1912, the militia became the Santa Barbara National Guard. The organization changed its name to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department on July 1, 1912. On October 5, 1916, the sheriff's department became part of the newly created California National Guard when Governor Frank Leland activated it for use in defense of state borders against Mexican restless elements. On September 9, 1922, a new Headquarters Building was dedicated at 101st Street and Main Avenue in downtown Santa Barbara after years of planning by then-Commandant John Pertsch and Major General Don Armstrong. In 1970s and 1980s there were several fires that destroyed various buildings in downtownSantaBarbara including: 1000 block of Cimarron St., 375 block of Mission St., 110 block of Elmira Ave., 300 block of Ventura Blvd., 400 block of Broadway Ave., 510 block of San Lorenzo Ave., 604 block of Center Rd.. In 1985 a bomb threat forced cancellation of an event at UCSB campus attended by President Reagan which led to increased security measures around campuses across California.
Santa Barbara, California is a city located on the Santa Barbara Peninsula in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 59,653 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city on the Santa Barbara Peninsula and second largest city in Ventura County after Oxnard. The history of Santa Barbara dates back to 1699 when Mission San Buenaventura was founded by Father Junípero Serra. Today's downtown area was first settled in 1836 by Spanish colonists as part of Rancho Atascosa de la Vieja mission chain. In 1879, the town became one of three towns that formed what would become Ventura County. The merger resulted in an increase in wealth for residents because of new agricultural settlements developed around Los Robles Creek and other freshwater resources near present-day Downtown Santa Barbara. The downtown district now known as "the District" began to grow rapidly during World War II due to military demand for housing within easy walking distance of Naval Air Station Vandenberg AFB and other military installations within minutes' driving distance of downtown Santa Barbara. As war shortages increased, prices for housing plummeted and today most homes are still rented or sold under rental agreement rather than bought outright like they were decades ago when families could afford more space within walking distance of quality dining and shopping options without sacrificing access to utilities or schools close at all hours! Today some 6% (or more) of the workforce lives outside of town while 96% (or more) identify with local economic interests; making it one of Southern California's most diverse cities with a wide range of cultural experiences available to its citizens from all walks of life!
