Santa Barbara, California is a city in southern California on the Santa Barbara Peninsula. The population was 43,821 at the 2010 census. It straddles both the Pacific and American continents and became an incorporated municipality on December 12, 1871. Santa Barbara County is located within its boundaries. In 1861, Mexican landowner José Joaquin Castro purchased Rancho Cucamonga from Manuel Nieto for $1 million. After numerous attempts by Castro to sell his land west of Santa Barbara proper to Anglo settlers, he finally sold it in 1865 to John Aspinwall for $10 per acre ($160,000). In 1876-77 Aspinwall donated much of his property including what is now downtown Santa Barbara to the town of Santa Clara for development into a small town with a post office and schoolhouse. With no access to water or transportation other than walking or horseback riding from where he grew up on Mount Pinos east of town (now part of State Route 101), Aspinwall relied heavily on donations from friends and family members in order to build roads and improve communications within the new community while also trying to attract businesses and tourists who would give him more money for his endeavors
