In 1946, Naval Air Station North Island was opened in nearby Carlsbad providing fighter training for local pilots. After World War II ended, there were efforts by the Navy to reduce its presence in Santa Barbara due to budgetary concerns. However, these efforts eventually proved successful when NAS North Island became an aircraft carrier operations base. Additionally, NAS North Island served as a homeport for several thousand sailors during Operation Neptune's Spear—the war against Afghanistan—in 2001. This event marked the beginning of a new era for Naval activity in Santa Barbara County and signaled an increase in military ties between our community and Washington D.C.. Today, NAS North Island Welcome Center offers annual events such as Sailors' Day Parade & Reunion Lecture; Mardi Gras Bash; Christmas Tree Lighting; BBQ Cruise Night; Blue Angels Airshow weekend at NAS Miramar Marina; New Year's Eve party at John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum). These events help keep Santa Barbaraians acquaint with their military community while showcasing local businesses who participate in these activities - everything from catering services to paintball equipment!

In 1854 an act was passed by Congress designating May 1 as "Fiesta del Carmen" honoring Cerón Pelaez who broughtHispanic cattle to market in1846 during this period known as Rancho Los Cajones which extended from present-day Goleta up alongthe coast to PtLA with large tracts also extending inland including partsof Ferndale, Baldwin Hills and North Hollywood In 1870 Fray Antonio Peñate arrived with 8 religious men from Mexico City under license from King Carlos IV of Spain to establish Mission Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación located on land grant given by Governor Pio Pico which included much of what are now Ventura County There were six missions in Alta California before Mexican independence Mission San Rafael Arcángel remained active until 1848 when it became a private mission In 1849 Mexican troops burned down the mission chapel during an uprising against Spanish rule Following this event threats were made against future Missions so Bishop José María Escobar created a new church site called Petit Monterey north of town across Crocker Street from Storrs School where today's Academy Of Fine Arts stands During this time many prominent Anglo Californians such as Cyrus Ketcham, William Stanton Hastings and John Sutter also moved here including Haskell Weiser who founded nearby Simi Valley
