Santa Barbara is a city in southern California and the county seat of Santa Barbara County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,673. In 1996 City Manager Don Bruce proposed that a new downtown area be developed within the boundaries of older buildings along State Route 1 between Foothill Boulevard and North Main Street—an idea that quickly gained support from business owners throughout town who saw this new development as an opportunity to create more job opportunities within reach for their citizens. This plan called for demolition or renovation of over 50 buildings dating back to 1886 which would be replaced with a new Downtown Area which would include: office space On November 3rd 2006 voters passed Measure V which will provide funding towards building projects statewide including downtown Santa Barbara through bonds issue
