They served original artichokes and other unique items that set them apart from other cafes in the area. In 1969, Donny & Marie's closed down after nearly fifty years of operation. However, they left behind a lasting legacy as one of the most popular local businesses in town. Beginning in 1984, José Andrés began producing quality small batches of coffee under his own name at his homebase near downtown Santa Barbara. Today, José Andrés Coffee is one of the largest independently operated coffee businesses in California with over twenty-five stores across three states (California, Oregon and Nevada).
Santa Barbara, California is a city in the U.S. state of California, located on the central coast of Ventura County. As of 2015, the population was 724,621 and it is the second most populous city in Ventura Countybehind Oxnard. The City of Santa Barbara was incorporated on January 5, 1885 by an act of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. The first European explorers to visit what is now Santa Barbara were Portuguese sailors sailing for Spain in 1542–43. A mission was established at Muro de la Cruz in 1602 by Franciscan friars with the name Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Mission after their patron saint, Queen Isabella I of Spain. The 1795 Alta California earthquake destroyed much of downtown Santa Barbara and killed many people; however, the city rebuilt quickly and prospered as a trading post for goods moving up and down the Central Coast from San Diego until about 1853 when gold began flowing from nearby Lompoc into Santa Barbara Harbour. In 1854–55 Captain James Cook landed on Monterey Peninsula looking for land to found a new colony but did not find any viable sites so he sailed back around Cape Horn instead and arrived here on July 3, 1856 aboard HMS Beagle under British scientist Dr John Evans who named this part of America "Islandia" after his ship reached its destination without finding any human beings living there (the only other Englishman to explore America during that time). After exploring this area extensively He returned home via Panama Canal before landing at Guayaquil where he met Governor Manuel Miranda who suggested Sandwich Islands as a place to establish a permanent settlement because they had no rocks or trees like those near Guayaquil which could be used as cover while ships sailed through; this proposal was accepted and Sojourner Truth set out with Lieutenant David GriggsMarchant with two cannons to explored these islands which are today known as Juan Fernández Island (Griggs-Marchant's discovery helped spur further development including mineral exploration here) On May 10th 1857 Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young crossed over from northbound steamboat Nauvoo Landing Ferry onto Juan Fernández Island following an arduous journey across swollen Butte Creek canyon using bullwhips/canes & modifications made to three preexisting boats--the Morro Bay Canoe Party (described by explorer Humboldt as one Of The Most difficult Boat Voyages Ever Made)—led by Captains George Wohlstetter & Samuel Hearn reaching Punta Gorda Harbor unassisted about sunset on June 2nd despite being followed every step OF THE WAY BY TWO HUNDRED MEN FROM MORRO BAY! paddling their canoes all night long!!! They then walked overland & built Fort McAllister consisting OF A TOWER WITH A GUN platform UPON IT & ITS BARRIERS WERE BUILT TO PROTECT THEM FROM THE ENEMY! This marked perhaps THE FIRST TIME THAT MAN ENTERED CANADA AGAIN!!!!!!!!! A similar event happened less than 1 year later when Captains John Fife Bartlett & Arthur Conan Doyle paddled their boat party ashore at Point Conception (now Pt Reyes National Park)and discovered oil wells!! Future US President Woodrow Wilson visited these lands during his 1893 visit HERE inland along Atchison River valley during his infamous Chihuahuan Desert Expedition while military forces commanded by General Grant blockaded Los Angeles

In 1861–1862, during the Mexican-American War following Mexican annexation of Alta California (near San Diego), American soldiers under Colonel Edward Bates raided Spanish missions here and elsewhere in southern California for weapons and supplies essential to General Mariano Guerrero’s army fighting against Mexican forces loyal to Spain; many local farmers were captured or killed as well as large numbers of Mexicans who had sheltered within these missions or compounds since before adobe walls had been erected around them during Californio rule in 1836-1846 In 1865–1866 privateer Captain James Cook ran aground off shore near what is now known as Cape Cod after encountering stranded vessels bound for Acapulco harbor; while some sailors were taken prisoner they created an eating contest among themselves to determine who could subsist longest without food Lieutenant Commander John Sutter landed his ship HMS Beagle onshore at Redondo Beach adjacent to present day Old Town since it was then thoughtland between Acapulco and Mexicali bayou called Punta del Este redoubt late 1830s under direction British Navy lieutenant commander George Vancouver Expedition exploring southeastern coastline

Santa Barbara became an American territory on February 14, 1848 after Mexico lost the Compromise of 1850. On July 8, 1915, Santa Barbara voters passed a $5 per capita income tax to fund public services such as sanitation and education. The measure was also the first statewide referendum in California. On October 15, 1930 Santa Barbara voters ratified a state constitutional amendment establishing the Santa Barbara City Council and making it an equal partner with county officials in local government Affairs. In 1978 Measure M (the "big sur") raised property taxes by $1 million to help finance city hall costs associated with the city's hosting of the Summer Olympics. The 1984 Winter Olympics were held inSanta Barbara County and brought increased development to the area around campus of UCSB and downtown SantaBarbara
