Santa Clara, California is a city in the Central Valley of California, located about 160 miles (240 km) northeast of Sacramento and south of Phoenix. Santa Clara is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, with a Hispanic population that numbers over 20% of the total populace. The city was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1795 on land grant from Spain. It was named for Father José de San Silvestre y de la Rúa, who visited in 1793. The Mission Santa Cruz de Asis was founded nearby in 1824 and it became known as the "father" mission because it sustained all other missions within its boundaries until 1846. After secularization of Mexican Missions by U.S. authorities, Father Joaquin Castro transferred ownership and management of Asis to his brother Alonso Martinez on December 12, 1850; they renamed the mission "Nuestra Señora del Carmen". In 1860 Rancho Rinconada was sold to John Bigler and included part of present-day downtown Santa Clara plus what are now portions of north Junior High School and east Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. The area now bounded by Third Street west to Interstate 80 south to Gilman Drive east was annexed into Santa Clara on February 3rd, 1913 when Hearst Corporation bought large tracts surrounding their new campus for $1 million from four separate landowners: Mr. Clements (1862-1927), Mrs. Bigler (1863-1929), Mrs. Knapp (1865-1945), and Drs., Hopley & Hopley (1868-1920). In 1912 Los Gatos resident Myron Wickerstedt donated land near what is now Eastgate Mall which would become Silicon Valley's first shopping center when development began there in 1957 after Wickerstedt family foundations purchased much property along First Street between San Carlos Road and Palo Alto Parkway

The first Europeans to arrive in Santa Clara County were the Spanish. In 1797, Don Francisco de Anza, captain of the San Francisco ship La Navidad, landed on the Peninsula from Mexico and founded Rancho Avila on present-day Mission Bay. The mission was completed in 1821 and named for Albuquerque, New Mexico. During the Mexican–American War (1846-1847), General Antonio López de Santa Anna occupied San José and reachedsequoyah Pass nearpresent-day Palo Alto before retreating northeastward. On his way he abandoned most of his army at an creek called Mission Creek because he was afraid it would be captured by United States forces under General Winfield Scott if they found out about his retreat. After Santa Clara County was formed in 1850, its first postmaster, Fernando Ortiz y Ramos, recommended that a store be built near what is now West Menlo Park. That store became the nucleus of later cities such as Palo Alto and Mountain View.
