The United States army has been present in Santa Clara, California since 1846. The first military presence in the area was when a small detachment of volunteers from San Francisco Battalion served under General Doniphan during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, the 1st Infantry Regiment was organized and garrisoned at Fort Yeehawkee on the banks of the Sacramento River. One year later, in February 1850, a detachment of Marines disembarked from HMS Beagle at Eastshore Cove to serve as an infantry support unit for Army troops stationed at Sonoma County Barracks. In 1862, following the American Civil War, Santa Clara became part of California Territory when it was divided between Union and Confederate territory. At this time, there were only about 6500 soldiers living in Santa Clara County and its militaries numbered only around 100 men. As war continued to rage outside of California, however,Santa Clara’s militaries began to swell with men from surrounding counties such as Marin (which had become a Confederate stronghold), Alameda (home to new military installations), and Contra Costa ( birthplace of Bay Area Rapid Transit). On December 12th 1861 Captain John Sutter’s battalion arrived in town after crossing over into Northern California via Mission Pass. They brought with them reinforcements for what would be an extended campaign against Native Americans upriver: 400 warriors under Chief Joseph Ewok led by Colonel James Shields arrived on January 3rd 1862 at Fort Ross Detachment #2 then moved upriver towards Gold Rushtown before finally arriving at Sutter’s Fort on February 14th – one day after General George Armstrong Custer’s famous “Battle Of Bear Valley” which ended disastrously for the Ulysses S Grant army near Sacramento City. That same year also saw skirmishes along Orinda Creek where Confederates unsuccessfully attempted to take control of a key wagon trail leading from Stockton into inland Kern County; this action is now known as Battle Of Orinda creek In 1863-1864 two companies each from Companies A & B 1st Cavalry AR were attached to 2nd Brigade 10th Calvary CA commanded by Brigadier General Lew Wallace until he resigned due to ill health On July 4th 1865 one company per battalion detached and joined regiment formed around brigade headquarters located at Dixon House on First Street between Castro street & Market street One company/battalion left service per month and joined regiment or brigade Headquarters located various places including First Street between Castro & Market streets

The Santa Clara Army National Guard was founded in 1852 as the 1st Infantry Regiment of California. The regiment served in various conflicts, including the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. The unit was redesignated the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment on October 25, 1898 and again on October 3, 1906. On November 15, 1912, the battalion was disbanded and its members absorbed into other units. In 1946, the battalion was reactivated and assigned to Brigade Headquarters at Fort Bragg. It concurrently served as a training battalion for infantry officers until it folded on July 24, 1949. On October 25th of 1998 elements of the brigade were reorganized under command of Major General Jerald Wuerzbicki effective from then on until disbandment effective August 1st 1999

In 1847, the first permanent adobe structures were built in Santa Clara County when Major George Barnes donated land to the community. The adobe buildings, known as the Barnes Adobe, were used for government and missionary services until destroyed in a fire in 1872. In 1865, Santa Clara was incorporated as a town with a population of around 100 people. The first post office in Santa Clara was established in 1868. The town continued to grow and by 1886 had a population of 2,500 people. The city of San Jose was founded nearby on the eastern side of the bay in 1892 and its growth led to an increase in population withinSanta Clara County as well. In 1911, arsenic contamination was discovered at an old munitions plant east of downtown San Jose and quickly spread throughout the city due to leakage from underground storage tanks. As a result of this discovery, sanitary conditions deteriorated rapidly withinSan Jose and widespread public outcry led to passage of Proposition 65 which regulated indoor air quality in California cities through 1986. Due to its proximity to Silicon Valley, San José became one of significantly heaviest economic and technological centers during Silicon Valley's early years with many major companies such as Apple Inc., Intel Corporation (INTC), Google Inc., Oracle Corporation (ORCL) settled there during that time period including Byte Shop (now part of Alibaba Group plc.), Sun Microsystems (SUN), Oracle Labs(OLAB) among others These companies are often considered pioneers or fathers within their respective industries
