The Santa Clara County Coast Guard is one of the oldest and most popular organizations in California. The organization was founded on Christmas Eve, 1877, when two men named George Eastman and Alpheus Howe decided to make a gift for the people of Santa Clara County. The first Coast Guard station was located in Point Conception, California. It was built by Captain Alfred Cushing and First Lt.George Bemis. The first cutter called “Santa Clara” was donated by Mrs. Simeon Sutter in 1887. Santa Clara became one of the busiest stations on the coast because it could provide security for vessels docking at San Francisco Bay. In 1888, Captain John Larkin donated an additional boat, which became known as “Larken” and served as a patrol boat until 1931. In 1914, Captains Edward Hutton and Harry Freeman donated another boat, which became known as “Hutton” and served as a harbor guard until 1951. In 1935, Commodore Clarence Kingdon donated an airboat that would be used to escort vessels into San Francisco Bay from the Morro Creek Naval Air Station at El Sobrante Island. In 1938, Commodore John Wills donation of an airboat allowed for essential patrols along with search and rescue missions duringwx Earthquake in Northern California In 1941-1945 Commodore Earl Jukes donation of two helicopters allowed the Coast Guard to provide round-the-clock coverage during World War II . After World War II ended Commodore James Meeks donation of three helicopters allowed for increased patrols off Southern California beaches . By 1974 all Coast Guard stations had been replaced by Helicopter Squadron One (HS1) which patrolled both coasts providing support for law enforcement detachments throughout Sonoma County . In 1988 HS2 moved its operations ashore to new facilities adjacent to the old Menlo Park Airport . By 2002 all helicopter squadron functions were transferred ashore to HS3 at Milpitas Harbor near Palo Alto after Milpitas lost their airport
