The 1960s saw a surge in interest in caffeine among young people throughout Silicon Valley; this led to increased demand for both beans and products made from them. This led to increased production at Samananda Coffee Company -owned by Harry Hirschberger until its sale to Peet’s Coffee Corporation in 1971-and also contributed toSanta Clara’s designation as a “coffee town” by popular acclaim. By 1990, Samananda had become one of America’s leading roasteries with more than 25 locations worldwide including outlets inside major shopping malls around the world.
