In 1876, the town annexed part of neighboring Juego Del Rio which made it into a full-time municipality. The name change came about because residents objected to being called "Juego Del Rio" (the game) when their town had nothing whatsoever to do with that topic; they wanted to be called "Santa Clara." Santa Clara, California is a city located in the Santa Clara Valley of southern California. As of 2010, the population was 298,795. The city’s name comes from Mission Santa Clara de Asís, founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1777. The mission was destroyed by an earthquake in 1857 and rebuilt on the same site. The new mission became known as “Reyes Iglesias” after San Francisco's first governor, José Gil Zaldivar Reyes y Aguayo. In 1850, entrepreneur Isaac Sennett bought land east of downtown Santa Clara for $1 million and began to develop it into a town with a population of 20 people. He named his town Santa Clara because he believed that God would protect it from damage caused by fire or weather. In 1851, Sennett organized what is now called the City Council and built the first courthouse in Santa Clara County. By 1870, Santa Clara had a population of over 100 people and two churches- one Protestant and one Catholic- as well as four stores and two schools. During World War II (1939-1945), Santa Clara played an important role in the war effort by housing naval personnel and supplying them with foodstuffs and munitions needed for the military effort overseas. In 1945, when Japan surrendered unconditionally at emperor Hirohito's order, most of Japan's military equipment was taken into custody including large numbers of weapons manufacturers such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Kawasaki Heavy Industry Inc., Toyota Motors Corporation etcetera which were transported to United States through modified Japanese trains called "Mitsubishi Pushes" The city also hosted many key events during this time such as: Day One: Japanese surrender ceremonies were held at City Hall on November 8th
