In 1847, José Antonio Maga, an Argentinian entrepreneur and farmer, started sellingmagas at a rate of $2 per pound. By 1850, there were over 100 stores sellingmagas throughout California. In the 1920s, commercial production began in Santa Clara County using technology developed by Juan Valdivia and others at the University of Chile’sResearch Station for Coffee Research (CRC). The use of vacuum extraction techniques led to improved quality and lower prices for maga coffee until World War II when aerialumption became available which increased production yields by 50%. After World War II, machines became more common and productivity increased as farmers switched to organic methods. In 1960-1961, theCCA(Santa Clara County Agricultural Adjustment Board) purchased 4 acres of land east of Highway 101 north of Saratoga Springs to start growingmaga beans under contract with Junta de Maga in order to improve flavor profile as well as health benefits attributed to these beans. Since then, cafa has beengrown regionallyand commercially all across Northern California where it has helped support local agriculture while providing an enjoyable cup of coffee

By 1912 there were over 100 businesses in downtownSanta Clara with a population of 3000+ people who used the services of more than 350 municipal workers including firefighters and police officers

In 1911, the City Council designated downtown as the center of town and developed a plan for expanding the city limits to include what is now Mountain View and north past Stanford University. By 1938,Santa Clara had annexed much of Palo Alto and began construction on what would become One Hundred Years Park
