The Santa Clara County Museum of Art (SCCA) has been in operation since 1915. As one of the earliest and most comprehensive art museums in Northern California, the SCCA has a rich history of hosting exhibitions and exhibiting marine gifts from around the world. From 1906 to 1959, the SCCA was home to The San Francisco Maritime Museum (SFM), which was responsible for displays of maritime artifacts from throughout San Francisco Bay. In 1959, SFM merged with the California State Library to become part of the California Department of Historic Resources. From then on, the SCCA continued to exhibit maritime gifts from all over California through its collections and programs. In 1992, when Santa Clara City Council decided that it would be better if SCA housed its own collection within city limits rather than sharing resources with SFM or Cal State Librarian’s Regional Gallery system, donations from local residents flooded intoSCA’s coffers.
