Founded in 1851 as a small Spanish mission town, Santa Clara quickly became an important center for technology and business. Santa Clara was founded on December 6th, 1851 by Father José de Jesús Atanasio Nunez y Balboa. The original village was located on the north bank of the San Joaquin River near what is now downtown Santa Clara. After three years of construction, the first permanent settler's house was built on December 7th, 1852 by José Francisco Urquiza and Manuel Nieto. In 1853 Father Nunez organized a group of Spanish Catholics to establish a missionary colony in present-day California. The colonists named their new settlement "Sanctuario" after Saint Nicholas (colloquially known as "Santo Nick") who had died in 1795 while leading a group of missionaries from Spain to Monterey Bay. In 1856 Don Fernando Ferrer donated 160 acres (65 hectares) of land east of downtown Santa Clara to become part of the newly formed City of Santa Clara. This donation set off an intense rivalry between two other cities vying for control over this valuable piece of property: San Francisco's Potrero Hill Parkland east of downtown and San Jose's Downtown area including much later 9th Street between First Avenue South and Mission Streets which would become home to Palo Alto University before becomingMountain View Networks Inc.. In1871 Samuel Morse donated another 80 acres (30 hectares) to make up for his earlier gift that had not been used originally intended for development within theCity limits but instead given away towards school construction purposes at what is now Stanford University across Hayes Street from where he lived). The growth around downtownSantaClara accelerated following World War II when huge numbers OF people moved into the city due to wartime production shortages elsewhere in Northern California such as Livermore Naval Air Station or Rancho Seco near Sacramento Countylineup with adjacent Menlo Park creating continued demand for housing even after many factories closed down during peacetime although there were no physical restrictions against developers building high rises or apartment blocks within the central business district itself .
