Santa Clara is the second most populous city in Silicon Valley after San Francisco. The population of Santa Clara grew from 3,554 in 2000 to 5,984 in 2010. As of the 2010 census, the population of Santa Clara was 7 per cent Latino and 92 per cent white American. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km2). Santa Clara began as part of Rancho Rincon de la Paloosa land grant given to Juan José Cámpora by José Murillo y Costilla on November 20th, 1825. In 1851, portions of what are now downtown Santa Clara were returned to rancho owner John Ellis Winton when he purchased Rancho Rincon de la Paloosa from Don Manuel Nieto. Winton named his new town “Santa Cruz” after his hometown back home near Manchester County England which he had visited while on a business trip earlier that year. On July 16th 1860 – just one week before California gained statehood – US Senator John A. Kinney filed legislation creating Alta California Province with jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas within its borders east of Mission Bay including what is now downtown Santa Clara In 1862 Modesto became the first incorporated municipality when it seceded fromSanta Cruz County and formed its own government under the name “Modesto” However due to increasing tensions between these two towns over local issues such as landfill development or water usage they reinstated their separate governments but continued to be considered part of Santa Clara After passage of statewide Constitutional Amendment No. 8 providing for municipalities within Alta California only those possessing a majority vote were allowed to join but only Modesto votedyea with Mayor Jens Christensen attending ) On January 1st 1865 incorporation papers were submitted for both towns claiming 501 citizens (now 6500) however Modesto was not included because it did not have a high enough population density .
