The Santa Clara National Guard was organized on May 14, 1912. The first unit to be activated was the 509th Infantry Regiment. It served in World War I and World War II. In 1949, the National Guard was changed from a state militia to a full-time federal service organization. In 1976, the Santa Clara National Guard became an affiliate of the United States Army Reserve Command. On October 1, 2007, the Santa Clara National Guard merged with the 408th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of California Army National Guard to form one brigade combat team under United States Army General Dynamics Soldier Systems Command’s Warrior system command. Today, Santa Clara's National Guard has over 9500 active duty members spread across seven counties in Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area including Alameda County and Contra Costa County in Northern California; Marin County in Southern California; Placer County in Nevada; Yuba County in Oregon; and Douglas County in Arizona. The guard provides law enforcement support for local communities as well as international missions such as peacekeeping operations and disaster relief missions throughout North America and Europe. In 2012-2013 alone, nearly $30 million was invested into new equipment and technology by our national guard members through procurement contracts with major defense companies like Raytheon Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Co., DoD’s Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 218 “National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013” – which authorizes billions of dollars in contract awards - among others! The Santa Clara National Guard was created on December 4, 1915 by the California state government as a militia to protect citizens and property from attack by Mexican anarchists. It initially served as a Reserve Militia, but in 1917 it became an organized unit of the National Guard. The Santa Clara National Guard's first duty was to provide security for Christmas parties during the holiday season. In 1923, the Guard was authorized to wear insignia of different branches of national service and began providing personnel for various military maneuvers throughout Northern California. On November 25, 1938, the Santa Clara National Guard established its own county-based department which provided law enforcement services in unincorporated areas of Alameda County. The San Francisco Bay Area Command also activated the Guardsmen from their suburban stations in Pleasanton and Livermore valleys on December 1st to serve with local police forces during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japanese insurgents inside China. In 1941, when World War II began, the Santa Clara National Guard assigned personnel to active military units in Southern California including Army Air Forces fighter planes stationed at Long Beach AFB and Monterrey AB; Coast Artillery troops at Fort Point Loma; and Navy shipyard crews working on USS Northrop Grumman (N2Y-4) project Bluefish. After Pearl Harbor, Los Angeles County activated its own units of the National Guardsmen while most other counties did not until after they had been called into service or were reorganized within their respective militias
Santa Clara is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. Santa Clara has been called the "Silicon Valley of the West" because of its concentration of technology companies and startups. Santa Clara is adjacent to Menlo Park and Palo Alto, two other large Silicon Valley cities. The area that now makes up Santa Clara was first inhabited by Native Americans including the Ohlone and Shasta People. Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on August 29, 1776 by Father Junipero Serra and Jesuit missionaries working with the Spanish military in celebration of Spain'svictory over Mexico in 1821. In 1853, Dona Julia Pérez bought Rancho Rinconada for $5,000 from Josefina Sanchez y Urdiales. The land comprising modern-day Santa Clara was purchased by John Dominguez in 1868 for $7 million from José Joaquín Balboa y Mendieta. The city proper began to form with the arrival of hundreds of settlers from Northern California during Rancho El Sobrante's construction as part of Alta California's largest land grant: Rancho Rinconada consisted largely of marshland situated between Mount Diablo to the north and Menlo Park to the south. Farming became an important aspect of life in this region since there were no markets or other means for bringing goods downriver to these settlements. By 1860, most residents lived within a few blocks of presidio walls built around what is today downtown Santa Clara
