In 1969, the United States Naval Station at San Francisco became the first navy installation in California when it was accepted as a site for the new Northern Pacific Railroad. The station served as a naval airfield and post office from 1923 until its closure in 1942. In 1946, the Naval Air Station El Toro was established on a tract of land east of San Francisco which served as an auxiliary to NAS Santa Clara. NAS El Toro was also used for storage and parking for Navy aircraft during World War II. The Navyactivated Naval Air Station North Island (NAAS North Island) on January 3, 1951 with an initial complement of four Grumman F4F birds. Withdrawal of U.S military forces from Japan began on September 2, 1952 and NAAS North Island became inactive effective September 26th due to lack of need for aircraft there after Marine Corps operation "Wasp" ended hostilities in Japan. On December 14th, 1953 Japanese Self-Defense Forces reopened NAAS North Island and assume control over all naval aviation activities within Okinawa Prefecture including NAS South Point/Chuuk Airport. As part of this reopening process various BuNo's were assigned to reflect the status or function at each station: 1st Fleet Aircraft Plant No 801 at Chuo; 2nd Fleet Aircraft Plant No 802 at Yuma; 5th Fleet Auxiliary Squadron Headquarters Unit (VAHQ) aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 74), Atchison Smithee Canal tow vessel; Helicopter Landing & Recovery Squadron One Hundred Fourteen embarked USS Racketson (LHD 6). From 1957-1960 NAS South Point/Chuuk Airport operated under U S Marine Corps jurisdiction as Joint Base Shimane Bay pursuant to Agreement between Marines and Japanese authorities giving joint use by both services ashore for revetment, administrative functions ashore etc.. Finally Nathan Smith AFB opened on October 1st 1961 when all three stations were closed down: USMC CHUUK AB located adjacent to NATHAN SMITH AFB...On November 15th 1959 operational control transferred from Japanese self-defense forces to U S Coast Guard via agreement between Coast Guard Commandant Adm William Leahy amd Rear Admiral Tadashi Kondo...NAAS North Island reverted back into Naval Air Station San Francisco upon closure of NAVSEA SAN FRANCISCO APPROACHING AS LAST TIME ON JUNE 30TH 1960 By this time only Grumman Wildcats remained operational at NAS SF...After years of anticipation numerous gift items were shipped offloaded onto ships arriving in San Francisco late summer 1960 by members of the local community - many becoming icons such as The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza Scroll donated by Mrs Emilio Aguirre y Cajeta et al., Control Tower Clock donated by Mrs Jane Goodall et al., GALAXY CLOCK FROM NAPA VALLEY AREA AND A LOT OF OTHER GATHERINGS Since that time much has changed with respect to ship arrivals into town - many gifts departing once they reached their destination never being seen again such is the history behind navy deployed gifts! Santa Clara is a city in California, United States. The population was 93,824 at the 2010 census. Santa Clara was founded on January 24, 1851 by Jasper Crayton and other entrepreneurs as a dry goods store and post office called "The Grapes" because of the high demand for grapes in California during the early 1850s. The first real evidence of human activity in what would become Santa Clara dates back to 10,000 BC when Homo erectus fossils were discovered at El Sobrante River Ranch. In 1847, Spanish Governor Manuel Michelino issued an order prohibiting any settlement within five miles (8 km) of Sonoma County without his express written consent. This order was followed by an even stricter one from Mexican governor José Joaquin de la Vega ordering all settlers out by November 1, 1848. Only men with property could stay, which limited access to women and many Native American residents who had settled in the region over time. As a result of this exclusivity policy, few Europeans or Americans ventured into what would become Santa Clara until it became part of California under US occupation following World War II

On July 10, 1850, a post office called Tomales had been established by members of the Spanish Mission San José de Guadalupe y Monterey at what is now Tomales Point on Marin Island; it was moved to present-day Santa Clara on December 15th year. The town's name originated with Father Junípero Serra who named it Nueva Vizcaya (New Valencia). Santa Clara grew rapidly due to its new role as an agricultural center during World War II and its proximity to major military bases like Sausalito and Tiburon. The Santa Clara County Chamber of Commerce and Industry has created a navy gift shop to offer military spouses and family members unique gifts.
