The Santa Clarita Valley Air Force Base was established in 1948 and is the home of the California Air National Guard’s 5th Wing, which is responsible for air defense of Southern California. The 5th Wing also operates a detachment of Global Hawk aerial surveillance aircraft. The base has been host to many air force gifts over the years, some becoming iconic and others more forgotten but all providing an important connection between the military and civilians in the Santa Clarita Valley. In 1946, General James E. Gavin founded Aero-Lift Incorporated with the goal of manufacturing helicopters at his Santa Clarita Valley Airport. Aero-Lift became one of America’s leading helicopter manufacturers and produced over 100 helicopters including two that were donated to the United States Military as part of President Harry S Truman’s gift to America in 1948. These two helicopters are now on display at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio where they provide flight training for pilots from all branches of service. In 1954, General Electric donated a C-5A Galaxy transport plane to be used by United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) as their new refueling tanker aircraft when they moved from RAF Mildenhall England. This plane served as USAFE’s primary refueling tanker until it was retired in 1990 after being replaced by the Boeing 727 airliner flown by USAFE itself starting in 1976 until its retirement on October 15th, 1998. In 1957, Aerojet Rocketdyne donated an R-7B Skycrane anti-submarine warfare aircraft to become part of USAFE’s inventory while they were still using RAF Mildenhall England as their main station for this purpose following World War II when American submarines stopped attacking ships off Britain's coast because they realized warships could not outrun submarines operating from bases like HMS Dolphin (based at Scapa Flow). In 1966, McDonnell Douglas Corporation gifted an F4U Corsair fighter jet nicknamed “Crocodile” to USAFE after it had been acquired by them during World War II as a flying laboratory demonstrator operated by Ford Aircraft experimentation company named Project Cobra (later renamed Northrop Grumman Corporation). From 1969 until December 31st, 1997 when it was retired due to bad weather conditions over San Diego County Naval Station Imperial Beach during Christmas Week there was daily active combat operations involving US Navy F/A 18 Hornets flying against enemy submarines within 12 nautical milesiles or less using electronic jamming equipment provided by Lockheed Martin Company under contract with NORAD llc known affectionately as " Northern Lights ". After more than 50 years without any serious action taking place against Allied submarines off our coast during wartime these capabilities slowly beganTo fade away although maintainers are currently active monitoring any submarine activity near our coastline both inside and outside San Diego County waters "Crocodile" flew its last combat mission on December 31st1997 before ending its long running relationship with USS Enterprise CVN 78 successor USS Donald Cook (DDG 78) conducting joint exercises withe Spanish Navy Almirante Garcia class destroyer La Cruz Vela ship based at La Jolla about 120 nm NNW San Diego County along California Coast Line.."

At that time, the USAF was known as the “Eighth Air Force” and was responsible for aerial reconnaissance and bombardment. One of their most famous gifts was the B-29 Superfortress bomber. This plane was originally designed to be used by the RAF, but due to its large wingspan and powerful engines, it quickly became a favorite among American pilots. The B-29 Superfortress had a number of different variants, including the RB-29D/E model which featured a longer range and greater bombing power than any other variant. It also had a new engine called the Wasp engine which could reach up to 5500 miles per hour (8500 km/h). The bombers were very versatile and were used in many different campaigns throughout World War II. Some of these include Operation Overlord – which saw Allied forces fight Nazi Germany in Europe –Operation Varsity – which aimed to Bomb Japan –and Operation Neptune’s Spear –which aimed to drop supplies on Burma during WWII. The gift giving process for these bombers was incredibly simple: representatives from each squadron would go over what they wanted given as a gift, then everyone else involved would vote on what should be sent next. ultimately, either an aircraft or some other type of gear would be chosen as a gift! On December 25, 1824, Santa Clarita Valley was named after the small town in New Mexico that had been founded by Spanish colonists a year earlier. The name stuck because it sounded like "santa." The first Europeans to visit Santa Clarita were members of Captain James Cook's crew on his ill-fated Endeavor Expedition of 1769-1770. They stopped at the mouth of the valley on their way back from San Diego and built a cabin there. A few years later, Don José Chávez de la Vega married an American woman, Maria Antonia Sanchez, and they moved to what is now known as Chavez Ravine in order to raise crops. In 1851, following Mexican independence from Spain, California became part of United States territory. As a result, the area around Santa Clarita became part of US society and culture more than it did that of Mexican society. In 1867, Alonzo Morse donated land near present-day Chavez Ravine for a school system that would provide education for children living in poverty in Southern California. The first building on this site was constructed in 1870; it was called the Home School House. This school system served students up until 1930 when it merged with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to form LAUSD–Santa Clarita Valley Unified School District (SCVUSD). Morse also contributed money towards construction of a water tower which remains today one of the most recognizable landmarks in Santa Clarita Valley. Construction began on this structure on October 15th, 1889 and finished three months later on November 10th under the name First Baptist Church Water Tower #1a (now known as El Toro View Park). The tower originally cost $2 million but thanks to donations by various individuals and groups such as Morse himself ($500 per student), its original cost was only $50 thousand dollars! A new high school opened its doors on September 24th 1994; it was called Woodrow Wilson High School after President Woodrow Wilson who had made history while attending Occidental College where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1917! After two decades of hard work by many individuals and groups including local businessman Donnie Piper ($25 thousand per year), construction finally completed on what is now known as Sierra Linda Middle School; this buildingopened its doorsto students On January 22nd 1998! It has since undergone several expansions MTVUCD went through during its time here including adding another wing which added an art gallery/auditorium/,nascent science labs/thesis labs/,and dining commons/. Finally upon purchase by SCVITA – Southern California’s largest charter school district – Sierra Linda Middleschool’s newest addition includes an activity gym/multi-purpose hall/multi-purpose courtyard gaining LEED Platinum certification! Today Santa Clarita is home to over 120000 people who call this beautiful community their home! There are so many wonderful things happening here every day such as new restaurants opening up or old businesses being reborn with fresh ideas; all due to these countless volunteers effort who make sure our community continues growing even further!
