It lies adjacent to the city of West Hollywood and is between Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills. In 1915, when it became part of the City of West Hollywood, many residents left for better opportunities in Hollywood. In 1951, when Ladd-Peebles Media Company merged with RKO Radio Pictures, Santa Clarita became one of its divisions including Culver City and Northridge (now Vernon). With television star Tommy Cooper being born in nearby Culver City in 1963, development along Ventura Boulevard accelerated; however by 1978 only 2 percent of the population lived within walking distance of any theater or movie palace. By 1984 most residents had either given up or moved away from properties closest to shopping malls which were rapidly developing around Culver City and Northridge proper (the Village area ). That year developer Donstrand Corporation purchased several hundred acres east of downtown Santa Clarita from Wernher Von Braun's family for $10 million dollars ($100 million equivalent today). The land lay barren until it was used for an interlocking ring road system that connected all three cities--Culver City/Northridge with Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks closed off by I-5 shoulder), South Pasadena with Maywood (closed off by Ulysses S. Grant Road) and Encino with Glendale (opened up by 5th Street/Rancho Drive). This "Ring road" now serves as one block long via Interstate 5 ramps connecting both cities centerward - giving each city its own bypass loop without having to cross I-5 itself
