This ordinance remains in effect today and has been cited by many as one of the most important measures ever enacted by Santa Clarita Municipal Court officials during their time as City Attorney & Mayor... Due to its location close to Downtown Los Angeles and its diverse economic base including service companies like healthcare and small businesses, much redevelopment has taken place within Santa Clarita over recent years including new housing developments (the biggest being Vista del Rey), retail centers/mall projects ( Warehouse District off I-10) as well as several professional sports teamss teams playing in USC ethically now based out of town due to stadium deals made with LASD(LA County Department Of Education). The first settlers in Santa Clarita were the Waddell family. The Waddells came from Kentucky in 1837 and started a ranch near present-day Gilroy. In 1851, the Waddell family sold their land to the Humes brothers and proceeded to build a house on it. The Humes family ran the ranch until 1912 when they sold it to John Sutter. Sutter built a mill on the creek and named it after himself, Santa Clara County (now San Bernardino County). The name stuck and Santa Clarita became an incorporated city in 1909.
