Santa Clarita is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1907 by German immigrants and is the namesake of Santa Clarita Boulevard. The city has adopted various names over the years, including "Agua Caliente" (Hot Water Springs), "Aliso Viejo" (The Aliso Canyon), and "Pasadena". The area now known as Santa Clarita was first occupied by the Tongva people, who were noted for their fishing skills. The town came to be known as Santa Clarita because of its abundance of clear water near where it sat on hills overlooking Southern California. As early as 1857, José Vasconcelos called it la Aguada Caliente (the Hot Water Spring). In 1907, John Dillingham donated land for the city limits and named it after his friend General James Fenton Clark, who had served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1909 and was known as La Jolla del Norte. In 1916, the name was changed to Santa Clarita and remained that way until 1951 when it was changed back to Santa Clarita. The current spelling began to take hold in 1984 when a group of local high school students started using it while working on a project they were undertaking called "Santa Claritas." In 1951, construction began on what would become one of Los Angeles' largest shopping malls, which today is home to more than 100 stores and restaurants. The mall's original anchors were Sears & Roebuck Co., Kmart Inc., JCPenney Corp., Macy's Inc., Neiman Marcus Group Inc., Kleinfeld Jewelers Incorporated and Department Stores Corporation. A second mall anchored by Safeway Companies opened in 1985 adjacent to the first with similar properties leased from other retailers such as Blockbuster Video and Dick's Sporting Goods Co.. Today, both malls have been retired with most tenants moving into new stores withinLOS ANGELES suburbia or out into neighboring counties such as Kern County or Orange County respectively Santa Clara Valley Citizens League
