At that time it had a population of 1,500 people and consisted primarily of Italian-American families from eastern LA who worked on the adjacent citrus crops or service jobs in Los Angeles County. By 1976, when Santa Clarita became an incorporated city under state law, its population reached 7,424 people and it still contains many Italian-American families from that period. During World War II (1941-1945), Santa Clarita served as an air base for United StatesAAF bombers flying to targets including Manila City in THE Philippines; Rabaul on New Guinea; Guadalcanal; Saipan; Tinian; Guam; Leyte Gulf; Okinawa Island and Japan. The local military installation also supported US Navy troop carrier aviation operations during the war while providing living quarters to U S Naval personnel stationed at Hangar No 1 at this location until 1946 when they moved to nearby Long Beach Naval Air Station (LBNAS).
