The first Starbucks location opened in 1977 in the heart of the city of Santa Clarita. In 1984, coffee companies including Peet's Coffee & Tea Corporation, Harry Potter's Wizarding World Ltd., and Jamba Juice began selling fresh roasted coffee from small shops throughout Southern California. It has been nicknamed "The Venice of the West" because it has long been one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations for its canals and view of the Hollywood Sign. The region now called Santa Clarita was first settled by Ohlone Indians in the 17th century. They built villages here until they were pushed out by European settlers in 1821. A mission founded in 1781 by Father José Altamirano named Santa Cruz de la Laguna served as a convent and parish center for these Native American people for many years before being moved to Mission Hills during Mexican rule. In 1847, Chico Canyon became part of Rancho San Fernando de las Flores administered from Monterey Park northeast of La Jolla. In 1850s local farmers got a license to cultivate citrus trees along what is now Rodeo Drive, which made them wealthy enough to build mansions such as Pasadena's Beverly Hills and Bel-Air Estate on nearby hillsides. Many families from downtown Los Angeles moved here during this time including those who bought Rancho San Fernando land from Ahumada in 1865 when that ranch was sold to John Sutter (founder of Sacramento). The town began as a small village consisting of about 100 residents around Rodeo Drive with just one stoplight – an old post office established in 1896 – and two stores operated by storekeeper George Copley between 1895 and 1907. The first school opened west of Route 66 in 1903; today's high school building was also constructed then with classes starting in 1905 behind it across Route 66 from where Highway 101 meets US 95 southbound just south of Interstate 575 eastbound traffic exiting I-5275Lea Road northbound onto I-5275Laughlin Road northbound), becoming part ofUSD
Santa Clarita was founded in 1887 by James Irvine and his brothers. The town was named after the Santa Clara River, which flows through it. TheIrvine family ran a grocery store and post office in the town until they sold it in 1907 to J.P. Morgan.Morgan renamed the store Santa Clarita Valley Grocery Company and began marketing groceries to local people as well as selling real estate. In 1917, he acquired the land that now makes up part of downtown Santa Clarita from Pabst Brewing Company for $1 million
