It was founded in 1887 by Santa Clarita Creek settlers after they discovered gold near the current site of downtown Santa Clarita. The name came from Spanish "santa clarita" meaning "clear water." The creek was renamed Santa Clarita Creek after the city was established in 1907. The first post office in Santa Clarita opened in 1888. The first store on Main Street opened in 1893 and the first bank branch open in 1907. The population of Santa Clarita peaked at over 10,000 residents in 1912 but then began to decline as manufacturing moved away from the area and jobs were lost due to World War I, Prohibition, and other economic factors. However, the town has continued to grow since then with more businesses opening up and population growth noted by the U.S. Census Bureau as recently as 2000 census results which recorded a total population of 14,412 people living within an urban service area composed of 5,812 people who resided within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Santa Claritta limits and 7,712 people who resided within 10 miles (16 km) or less thereof). The history ofSanta Clarita can be traced back to 1887 when prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Santa Clarida. At that time there were no roads or any public services so settlers had to travel long distances for goods or services.
