It is located on the edge of the San Fernando Valley, bordered by Agoura Hills to the east, Sherman Oaks to the south and west, and Northridge to the north. The population was 116,033 as of 2018. The name "Santa Clarita" comes from Spanish for "the saint's village." When Europeans first arrived in this area in 1790 they named it El Patronato de la Gente de Nuestro Señor (The Parish of Our Lord's People). The original mission church was built here in 1824. In 1847 Loretto Abbey began providing religious services here and the community came to be known as "The Mother City of Loretto." In 1915 Sheriff Hernando Cortez ordered all law enforcement officers out of Los Angeles after rioting broke out over an inflammatory speech by then- Mayor James Byrnes. Deputy Sheriff Harry Teague took command and ordered all citizens not to bring weapons into town so that there would be no insurrectionary atmosphere. On December 2nd 1915 Teague organized a parade through downtown Santa Clarita with nearly every citizen present carrying arms He also called a meeting at his home where he proposed forming an emergency committee to handle law enforcement problems in town during Christmas season. This committee became known as "The Committee on Public Safety." On October 12th 1916 when word spread throughout Southern California that America's new war president, Woodrow Wilson had been elected President, large numbers of people flooded into Santa Clarita from everywhere in Southern California for what turned out to be one of the largest Christmas events ever staged in Southern California history.
