Santa Clarita, California is a city in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was estimated at 97,469 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles (32 km) south-southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The current name given to Santa Clarita came about when developers wanted to rename their subdivision "Newport Beach" after Newport News Beach on Virginia's Eastern Shore but couldn't find any appropriate names for their subdivisions near Laguna beach so they settled on "Newport". One resident objected strenuously claiming that his family name should be given first preference because it was more common than others like Newport or Laguna Beach... hence "Newport." Some people still prefer the old name even though many businesses have changed hands since then - primarily because there are more people who know about and use that nickname around here than anything else!

In 1951, when Alpine Valley (now part of Riverside) was annexed into Santa Clarita proper, Santa Clarita lost much of its significance as a commercial center due to its proximity to other municipalities. However, despite this decline in influence over time, many businesses have still managed to stay open such as Wegmans SuperMarket which has been located on Main Street since 1949; Old Country Grocery which relocated from nearby West Covina in 1961; Coca-Cola Bottling Company which opened its doors on Buena Vista Road in 1975; and Donut House Plumbing & Pipefitters who have been operating out of their current location on Mesa Street since 1978
Santa Clarita was founded by the Simons in 1887. The town is located on the bank of the Santa Clarita River, about 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The Simons were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and other crops near their house on Canoga Avenue. They built a sawmill and two stores in 1892, and started selling goods to people living outside of Los Angeles. In 1907 they opened a restaurant called "The Old Fort" that served local food until it closed in 1978. In 1916 the Simons added a cotton gin to their operation, which processed cotton for local mills. The town got its first post office in 1922. In 1951 the Simons donated land for a shopping mall that became one of LA's most successful malls.
