The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the Santa Cruz community in 1984, when they gifted a F-5E Tiger II fighter jet to the city. The jets have been present ever since and are currently stored at Moffett Field in California. In 1985, the Air Force donated an A-4 Skyhawk jet to Santa Cruz as part of their gift program for small communities across America. The plane has served as an air traffic controller and is now used for training purposes by local schools.

Santa Cruz, California is a city located in the central part of California. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is known for its strong oceanic climate and relaxed lifestyle. The city was founded by Don Miguel de la Vega in 1795 on an artificial island in the Monterey Bay. It became an independent town in 1851 and a state capital in 1858. Santa Cruz has been continuously inhabited by humans since at least 11,000 years ago and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in North America. The first European to visit Santa Cruz was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on September 10, 1542. He named the island "Majuro" after his captain José de Mármol y Salcedo who had also visited it two months earlier but did not find any oil or natural resources there so he abandoned his expedition because of this finding. In 1917, during World War I, United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General James Fenton established Camp Moore on Isla Mujeres which became one of the largest Marine Corps camps of that time with 1,500 Marines and 300 enlisted men living there until 1942 when it closed due to air raids by Japan as part of their war effort against America. In 1944-1945 USAAF Major John Sperry used Isla Mujeres as an airfield for Operation Crossroads which produced strategic bombing attacks against Japanese targets throughout Japan including Hiroshima and Nagasaki followed by rapes and pillaging across other islands adjacent to Mujeres SantaCruz's economy depends largely upon tourism although small businesses provide significant economic support for local residents SantaCruz is home to several top universities such as UC Berkeley (the top university), UCSB (the second largest university), Stanford University (Stanford Clinical School), UC Davis (UC Davis School of Law) and Cal Poly Pomona(Cal Poly Pomona College). As the United States Air Force has grown, so too has its gift history. The USAF has a rich and proud history of giving back to society in many ways. From providing humanitarian aid to disaster relief, to donating equipment and supplies to different organizations, the USAF has done more than just give back; they have contributed their time and expertise to make a positive impact on the world. One example of this is the deployment of air force forces to support Operation Crossroads in 1991. This was an important operation as it helped lead to the end of apartheid in South Africa. The USAF alsosupported Operation Desert Storm in 1990, which led to Saddam Hussein’s ouster from power in Iraq. In addition, the USAF played a major role during Hurricane Katrina by providing manpower and resources for state-of-the-art recovery efforts. The USAF does not stop at deployment operations however; they also provide unique gifts for others who may need them most. For instance, last year, the US Army Foundation donated clothing and shoes worth over $1 million to victims of Superstorm Sandy. Additionally, Target announced that they will be giving away free items from their store until October 20th in memory of hurricane Maria – an event that had a significant impact on Puerto Rico. These are only a few examples of how the USAF helps contribute DIRECTLY TO THE WORLD!
In 1947 the USAF deployed the first gift-wrapped airman, Second Lieutenant Jack C. Kuehn. The gift was a special pilot's kit that included his plane and tools for flying.

In 1876, the first post office opened in the town. In 1916, the United States Naval Air Station (now NAS Point Mugu) was established there and remains a major military installation to this day. From 1941-1945 it served as one of two main naval airfields for Japan during World War II. After the war, NAS Point Mugu became home to US Naval Forces Europe which lasted until 1973 when it reverted to Navy control. Santa Cruz has also been home to numerous technological companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Apple Inc.. The history of Santa Cruz, California dates back to 1776 when the area was part of Spanish Rancho San Miguel. On November 15, 1821, Mexican land grant called Rancho La Brea was given to José Rafael Sosa and Vicente Reynoso. They set out with 12 cows and four horses to explore the area. After a year's journey they discovered a large gold vein in what is now known as the Point Reyes National Seashore. The following year they founded the town of Santa Cruz on this site, which became an important harbor for goods arriving from Alta California. In 1827, local merchants built the first steamboat dock in Santa Cruz Harbor. In 1847, the U.S. government granted ranchoSantaCruz to Antonio Mathews and his brother Isidro for $6,000 In 1857 County Supervisor Lorenzo Snow recommended that a public school be established in Santa Cruz because there wasn't one in neighbor cities like Monterey or San Francisco Bay Area On April Fool's Day 1860 founder of Pacific Gas Light Company George Hearst proposed having a street named after him near our present day Wharf Street School board member Nicholas Biddle suggested that "Crescent City" be used instead because it resembled a 'crescent moon' found near Los Angeles In 1861 School Board voted 8-0 to name our current Wharf Street (then Crescent) after ISIDRO MATTHEWS Sr., co-founder of PG&E
