The Santa Cruz Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1853. The unit was formed as the Santa Cruz Volunteer Infantry, and served in various local militias during the Mexican-American War. In 1875, the regiment was organized as an artillery battalion and participated in the California Gold Rush. After World War I, the Santa Cruz Militia became part of the California National Guard and was reorganized in 1924 as an infantry regiment. The regiment fought in World War II and then deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit returned home in 2004 and remains stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina today. Today, the Santa Cruz Army National Guard is one of Northern California's most active units with over 1,200 soldiers assigned to serve across 17 counties. The unit participates in a variety of duties including law enforcement, counterterrorism operations, Search & Rescue missions, military ceremonies and parades. A number of Soldier's medals have been awarded statewide including twoominated for service excellence awards from both state capitols; three've been given to members for distinguished heroism during exercises or deployments; four've been given for meritorious service within their branch/division/ brigade; six've been awarded for leadership roles within their command structure; seven've been bestowed with community service award(s); ten's have earned honorable mention distinction from respective commands...In all there are more than 50 recipients who have received these distinctions since 1978!

The Santa Cruz (Calif.) Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1849. The unit was first organized as Company A, 1st Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry on July 24, 1849. On October 3, 1850 the battalion was re-designated as 2nd Battalion, California Volunteers and on November 12th1851 it was redesignated as 3rd Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry. In 1861 the battalion became part of the 8th Regiment of volunteers from California and served in the Civil War under General George Custer. In 1865 the battalion became part of the 9th Regiment of volunteers from California and served in Reconstruction in what is now Georgia until 1868 when it returned to California. The battalion disbanded on August 15, 1870 and its members were recombined into other units. On January 6, 1916 a detachment of Santa Cruz County Guardsmen formed Company H at Camp Roberts near Monterey Junction with orders to patrol southbound Interstate 5 between Sacramento and San Francisco during World War I. The company arrived in early February 1916 and patrolled for two weeks before being ordered to report to Camp Grant near Yreka for training purposes only. After arriving at camp on February 10th 1916 Company H continued exercises but no combat activity occurred until March 1917 when American forces began their assault against German positions along coastal towns north of Sausalito. Santa Cruz, California is a city located on the central coast of California. Since it was founded in 1849 by Spanish settlers as Rosas de Santa Cruz, the city has been an important cultural and economic center for the region. Santa Cruz is known for its relaxed lifestyle, stunning coastline, and rich history. The city had a population of over 350,000 in 2010 and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in North America. The name "Santa Cruz" means "holy ground." The original inhabitants of what is now Santa Cruz were Native Americans who lived near Point Conception before being driven out by European settlers in 1821. The area that would eventually become Santa Cruz was first settled by Europeans in 1792 when Captain Juan Bautista Vizcaíno landed onshore with his fleet to look for a new land route to China. After finding none suitable he sailed back home but this time decided to name the spot after Saint Crispinus, who had aided him during his journey. The first permanent European settler in what would become Santa Cruz was Pedro Montt who arrived onshore with his family in 1795. He named his new town San Lorenzo de la Matanza since he felt that it was at the foot of Mount Pachacuti (the mountain which today marks Rancho San Lorenzo). In 1811 Lt. Governor Manuel Micheltorena ordered Diego Rivera to establish a military post at Point Conception so that General Antonio Lopez de Legazpi could monitor navigation between California and Mexico City. This task failed due to bad weather and Lopez de Legazpi abandoned his outpost at Chumash Bay instead opting for a more northerly location at what is now Point Lobos on Cape Mendocino County's Coast Guard Pier #3B1A2A1E1C3D4F5G2H6K7J8R9P8QP9T10U10V911010 (shown below).
