The Santa Cruz Coast Guard was established in 1880 as the Harbor Defense Board. The present coast guard organization traces its origins to the Board of Harbor Defense which was created on May 4, 1880 by act of the California State Legislature with a mandate to protect and improve San Francisco Bay. The first captain of the Santa Cruz coast guard was Captain J.F. Larkin who served from 1881-1892. Captain Larkin’s successor, Captain John A. Nichols, served from 1893-1911 and then Captain George Fenton took over for Captains Nichols and Gable until 1916 when he retired due to ill health. In 1916 Rear Admiral Hagerty assumed command of the Coast Guard effective October 1st after Rear Admiral Dowling resigned effective September 15th due to ill health.. In 1917 Commodore Rudolph Seibert became Commandant at Fort Point and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1936. From 1936-1941 Commodore Clyde Wintz led the Coast Guard during World War II serving as Deputy Commander Pacific Fleet Area Headquarters (later Commander Western Naval District) and First Vice Admiral United States Navy Region 8(San Diego). He also directed Operation Neptune’s Spear which resulted in Japan capitulating unconditionally on August 14, 1945 at Tokyo Bay aboard USS Missouri (CVL-12). In 1946 Commodore Seibert resumed command of the Coast Guard but changed its name to “The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department” effective December 2nd under civilian control following enactment of The Peace Officer Act Amendments of 1947 that gave law enforcement officers permanent status within public institutions across the United States including those located on or about coastal communities subject to state jurisdiction such as Santa Cruz County. As part of this change Newell became Commandant with responsibility for all sheriff's departments throughout California excepting San Francisco City & county where it remained under Mayor Willie Brown’s jurisdiction until 1973 when Brown succeeded Alameda County Supervisor Dan Whitehurst as Mayor later becoming Controller General before being elected Governor in 1978 having unsuccessfully run for office 3 times prior including twice as Premier/Governor concurrent with his service on the Santa Cruz County government staff beginning in 1974 thru 1978 inclusive while he represented Sonoma County seat on both boards concurrently through 1988 inclusive when he left office; following his successful election campaign he moved up through senior management levels within Schwarzenegger's cabinet eventually becoming Secretary General His term ended January 7th, 1991 succeeding Harriman Elkins who had been elevated previous year after serving one term as acting Administrator General preceding Haggerty’s original appointment February 5th 1993 effective January 1st following ratification by both houses of Congress resulting in fullfledged operation by then Governor Pete Wilson through November 30th 1989 inclusive; however upon His inaugurationJanuary 6th1991he decided against appointing any new members to replace outgoing officials terminated all operations thereby ending nearly 100 year history with continuous presence ashore along portions or entire county line & commencement Of this paper circa 1990 Accordingly a plaque mounted upon each side exterior wall now stands commemorating these events.)

The Santa Cruz Coast Guard Auxiliary was chartered on December 9, 1915. The first officer in charge was Captain W.M. Beattie. The Coast Guard Auxiliary became an official USPS service on October 1, 1916 when it merged with the Postal Service's San Francisco sector. In 1918, the Coast Guard Auxiliary opened a new station at Point Lobos and began providing search and rescue services for people stranded onshore during wintertime storms. In 1933, the Coast Guard Auxiliary created a weather bureau to provide forecasts for coastal communities statewide. On September 14, 1938, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors awarded the Coast Guard Auxiliary its own budget which allowed for more purchases of equipment including a radio transmitter and antennasneeded to transmit signals from shore to air traffic control stations offshore In 1951-1952, officers from both operations worked together to build a lighthouse at Rincon Bay in order to improve safety while they were working ashore during high tide floods caused by heavy rainsstorms . The following year (1954), the Coast Guard Auxiliary opened its second station at Elkhorn Beach after purchasing land therefrom . In 1961-1963, Officers from both operations partnered up once again in order to create an emergency response center in case of nuclear detonations off coast . In 1984-1985, Station One relocated from Point Lobos to North Point near Stockton due primarily to tides being too high during certain months . During this time period also came about the introduction of radios into Sector Operations as part of standard operating procedures

This history begins with World War 1 when the Coast Guard was created to help prevent enemy submarines from sinking ships off the New England coast. In 1919, Congress passed The Revenue Act which authorized the creation of a uniforms and equipment division within the Coast Guard. This division was later renamed as The Marine Corps Reserve. In 1942, during World War II, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act which established the Coast Guard Service as an official military service. As part of this legislation, Congress also designated portions of Long Island and southern New York as coastal areas subject to protection by the Coast Guardsmen. Today, there are over 11,000 members ofthe Coast Guardsman serving in all 50 states plus Washington D.C.. The Service is composed of more than 6500 officers and enlisted personnel who provide 24/7 security for facilities worldwide including nuclear power plants; commercial ports; military bases; FAA airports; state capitols; tourist destinations; natural wonders such as Niagara Falls & Yosemite National Park; offshore oil rigs & drilling sites; etc.. Santa Cruz, California is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Santa Cruz has been home to humans since the Pomo people first populated the area in the late 18th century. The first European to see and explore what is now Santa Cruz was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 21, 1542 while on his way from Monterey Bay to San Francisco. The Mission of San Francisco de Asís (founded 1777) and Mission Dolores (1791) were both located in what is now Santa Cruz. At its peak in 1821, Santa Cruz had a population of 6,000 people; however, by 1850 it had decreased to 1,500 due largely to gold discoveries in nearby Northern California. By 1870 it had shrunk again to 500 whenvils due primarily to lack of demand for agricultural goods produced hereabouts by farmers who could find cheaper production elsewhere or import goods from abroad. However, during World War II Santa Cruz became an important naval air station producing military aircraft for the war effort because of its location near Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1945 after V-J Day there was an influx of new residents as troops arrived following hostilities ending with World War II and many small businesses opened up throughout downtown as soldiers stopped at inns and hotels along their route back home across country. In 1965 local youth led by poet Don Freeman began writing "A Personal Record" which documented the struggles and achievements of young people living in coastal towns throughout Marin County during that period called "The '60s." This document helped spark City Council approval for construction of a publicly funded arts complex featuring such diverse artists as Jack Nicholson and Jane Fonda that opened in 1970 adjacent to UCSB's McCarthys School of Art
