Santa Cruz is a city located in the Santa Cruz County of California, United States. The population was 68,853 at the 2010 census. It lies on both sides of the Santa Cruz River, and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European to explore and name Santa Cruz was Mateo Pico in 1542. The area that now includes Santa Cruz was first explored by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1602 as he sailed along the coast from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. In 1768,Captain Samuel Falconer named it "Isla de la Cañada" (Island of the Cliff). As early as 1824, Missionaries organized by Father Junípero Serra built two missions nearby: one for Franciscans and another for Mexican converts known as "Los Padres". In 1831, Alvarado brothers founded Rancho San Lorenzo al Marejo which became part of ranches run by Stanford and others until 1945 when it became part of University Park. In 1848, Don José Antonio Blanco y Rasputin founded Misión Concepción de Amontillado with 36 soldiers under Captain Felipe Carrillo y Bustamante to farm land grants around Point Reyes National Seashore. By 1850s there were over 100 families living here including many who had come from Mexico during–the Mexican Revolution (1846-1848). After Californios gained statehood in 1850 they began leasing Ranchos Nigres from Mexicans and turned them into villages while buying off individual landowners to maintain rancho tenure through passage of Land Act No. 7 (1851). This legislation allowed Californios to purchase land east ofurdy Creek for grazing purposes only with full title reverting back upon purchase or gift from original owner(s). During this time period some Mormon pioneers also settled in what later became downtown Santa Cruz; however their settlement did not create strong Anglo-Saxon cultural ties because no public services were provided such as schools or transportation until after World War II when local businesses began offering these services “out-of-town” but within walking distance for most citizens During World War II much economic activity took place ashore due to Navy yard construction facilities at Point Reyes Station on Friday Island just north of town center and Naval Air Station Fairfield across Strait Road northeastward beyond Fort Fisher Beach situated on an artificial beach created between Saturday Harbor and Thursday Harbor On 9/11/2001 Bomber Saudi Al Younis bombed two commercial airliners traveling out of Los Angeles International Airport killing all 259 people aboard those planes plus 11 passengers on American Airlines Flight 93 which crashed into a remote wooded area outside Lancaster County PA less than 5 miles south west of where Iwo Jima once stood

Santa Cruz, California is a small city on the central coast of California. It has a population of about ninety thousand people and is the county seat for Santa Cruz County. The city was founded in 1853 by John C. Fremont and named after Saint Cruz in Portugal. The first post office in Santa Cruz opened in 1857. In 1863, the town was renamed from Spanish "Huelva" to its current name, Santa Cruz, after the English settlement of that name on Monterey Peninsula in California under Royal Governor George Vancouver. The City Council approved annexation by Berkeley on February 10, 1916. As part of the deal, Santa Cruz received land east of University Avenue and south of Potter Way as well as Brush Street between Masonic Boulevard and Pacific Avenue. On July 1st 1917, San Francisco annexed Santa Cruz along with nearby cities such as Berkeley andOakland to form a new city-county government which was known as City of San Francisco (or simply SF). At various points during its history, the City of Santa Cruz had either two or three mayors: one from 1906 to 1912; one from 1915 to 1933; one from 1936 to 1941; one from 1944 to 1945; and finally William Jarrell who served until his death in 1967
