As coffee enthusiasts from around the world come to Santa Cruz, California each year for the Coffee Festival and/or local roasts, it is important to remember that this city has been home to some of the most famous gourmet coffee in history. The first coffee house in Santa Cruz was the Dutchman's Coffee House, which opened in 1795. The first espresso machine was built by Giovanni Brugnoli in 1875. In 1907, Italian immigrant Antonio Gramsci leased space at 5th and Market Streets and began serving roasts of Italian-origin beans direct to friends and family. In 1927, Donato Manzoni opened his own coffee house on Main Street called Pazzi's Cafeteria. This spot would be known as one of the most popular tourist destinations for locals and visitors alike because of its extensive sign list of restaurants including American, French Connection, Cafe Italia (later reopened as a Bottega Veneta), Lazio Café (now closed), Pizzeria Paradiso (closed), Scalaobar (closed) and Il Santuario (closed). Manzoni also served up numerous pastries such as Tiramisu andPanettone from his café’s ovens. In 1961–1962 Angelo Agostinelli ran an unsuccessful campaign for Santa Cruz City Council on the platform of revitalizing downtown with new shopping malls and restaurants rather than traditional cafe’s like Pazzi’s Cafeteria or Manzoni’s Café – two factors that had contributed to its decline since World War II. However, Agostinelli is best remembered for opening The Catfish House on Depot Street near Alameda Street which became a popular nightspot for students studying at UCSC during the late 1960s until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. A few years later after community activists successfully campaigned against plans by then Mayor Tom Bradley to demolish much of downtownSantaCruz he decided instead to rehabilitate many older buildings within walking distance once again becoming an advocate for downtown redevelopment along with developer Bob Goff who purchased The Catfish House site back from Agostinelli with plans to turn it into a large high-end restaurant called Larken & Martin which would become one of Santa Cruz' most iconic landmarks across town until it too was lost in arson following a dispute over money owed rent dating back to 1978 between developer Rick Elzinga and nightclub promoter Donny Hathaway; another example of how social activism can impact business decisions within coastal communities during this time period

Santa Cruz is a city located on the north coast of Santa Cruz County, California in the United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 128,536. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is accessible from both Northern and Southern California through Interstate 880. The city's economy depends largely on agriculture, especially wine production. The first Europeans to visit Santa Cruz were Spanish missionaries in 1768–1769. The area now known as Santa Cruz was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 and named San Lorenzo de los Montes after his patron saint in Spain. The Mission San Rafael Arcángel (founded 1776), which became known as the "Mission Dolores" because it stood near where Mount Dolores stands today, served as an early center for religious missionary activity in this region. In 1834, General Mariano Guerrero appointed José Joaquín Guzmán y Pacheco the first governor of Santa Clara County; Pacheco had come from Mexico City with orders to arrest American citizens who had fled Mexican rule during the 1824–25 federalist uprising against Mexican Emperor Antonio Lopez de Legazpi. In response to this proclamation, American merchant George Hearst built his Adobe Walls out of adobe brick at what is now Hearst Tower within sight of Point Reyes National Seashore on May 12, 1834- a day before Alta California (Upper California) became a state under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency on February 26 that year. A number of small businesses were started along I-880 when it was first realigned in 1958 following passage of legislation creating metropolitan areas surrounding Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area cities

By 1870, more than two million pounds of premium grade beans had been exported from Africa annually! Santa Cruz was founded in 1795 by Juan Rodriguez de la Roca and Antonio Jose de Mendoza as a small Spanish town on the Santa Cruz coast. The first European to visit Santa Cruz was Francisco Vásquez de Cuellar, who sailed up the coast in 1699. In 1821, it became a Mexican territory following the Proclamation of Independence from Spain. After California gained statehood in 1850, San Francisco's mayor, John F. Geary, recommended that the city name its new district after Commodore James K. Polk's older brother Rear Admiral Hiram J. Grant who had been governor of California during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On November 15th 1860, at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors convened to consider annexation of Monterey Peninsula city by San Francisco, Santa Cruz voted against annexation because it felt that its people would be more likely to support independence if their community were itself municipally self-governing than if they were lumped with an unappreciated port town on the Peninsula. On December 12th 1860, San Francisco and Monterey City merged into one municipality under Mayor Geary's administration under the name "Santa Cruz"
