Santa Cruz, California (locally known as "The City of the Arts") is a city located on the Santa Cruz Peninsula in Northern California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 122,883. In 1853, the U.S. government purchased land around what is now Ventura County for $1 million and named it SantaCruz County after George Washington Harris, General Manager of Rancho San Lucas de la Rocha in southern California during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The mission district that included present-day SantaCruz City was founded on October 24, 1849 by Father José Gomez y Ortega with Juan Bautista Pacheco as his companion as part of his evangelization efforts in northern Monterey County; both men had come from Chihuahua Province in Mexico City on their way to find new areas to evangelize with hopes of converting more Indians into Christianity following Spain's collapse at wars ending with Mexican independence. One year later (January 2, 1850), Father Gomez traveled down range leading about 50 people on horseback across Paso Robles Pass into Mendocino County; he encountered strong resistance from local Indian groups led by Chief Manuel Nieto until finally successful conversions were made at an old Vikado Mission site near modern-day Ukiah just north of Ukiah Point where Gonzalez Dominguez had long presided over a small mission station known earlier as Fortunato Malpaso before it became part of what would become Santiago de Compostela Abbey under Father Miguel López de Legazpi in 1776/77; this also marked beginning of European colonialism within what would eventually become Silicon Valley along similar lines – while Friar Miguel López’s “gracias al Espíritu Santo” service was still being offered free inside San Francisco churchyards nearly two centuries later!
