When the United States Marine Corps was founded in 1875, there were few if any Marines stationed in Santa Cruz. However, over time, the corps grew and began deploying Marines to various locations around the country. In 1931, Santa Cruz became the first Marine Corps installation outside of California when Marines arrived from Quantico, Virginia. The Corps continued to grow and deploy throughout World War II; by 1944, Santa Cruz had become an active Marine base with a total of 730 Marines. The post-war years were challenging for the military branch as well as marine personnel in general. Withdrawals began happening all over America asbaby boomers reached adulthood and realized their dreams of serving their country abroad. Despite this obstacle, service members persevered and within a few decadesSanta Cruz had become one of the most diverse Marine installations on Earth. Today’s marines are still fighting at home and abroad – they’re part of Operation Neptune’s Spear III which is currently ongoing in Afghanistan. While many aspects of our military have changed since then (e.g., technology), it seems that marine tradition continues to thrive: every Christmas present a marine gives his or her loved ones is something special!

On December 6, 1847, a small group of people from Santa Cruz gathered together to form the first Anglo-American settlement in what is now California. By 1850, Santa Cruz had a population of around 150 people and began to develop into a major port and trade center. In 1857, the town was renamed San Francisco after the United States capital city. It was during this time thatSanta Cruz became known as one of the most liberal cities in America due to its dedication to free speech and open government. In 1865, General Douglas MacArthur called Santa Cruz his "second home" because he felt he could rely on its support during his campaigns against Mexican forces. Today, Santa Cruz is an important community with strong cultural ties to both Silicon Valley and East Coast universities.
